    LED Bulbs

    Hi All

Has anyone fitted these to the Stag? And are they brighter/better than the original bulb?

Not sure Stuart, I would like to see them before commiting any money. Personally I'm not a fan of the new cars, busses and lorries that have them fitted. They are too intense and only have a narrow beam angle so to me they are not always as visible to the side.

ALSO do not be tempted to replace you indicator bulbs unless you you replace yor original flasher unit as well. The LED ones will not draw enough current to make the flasher work.

I do keep thinking about replacing my dash warning lights and das illumination with LEDs though, the higher intensity narrower beam may mean that you might actually see the warning lights in day light

Problem with LEDs in the dash, they can't be dimmed, they don't draw enough current to make the oil pressure / brake warning circuit work, and they are fiercely bright. I like them, but using them in our dashboards is problematic, you have to make all your own fittings as to be small enough they only come with two bits of wire. Just thinking out loud. Martin.

It must be possible to have dimmable LED's.

My Lotus Elise has a STACK instrument display illuminated with LED's, and you can dim them. Infact I don't think they are anything special because some owners replace the LED's for different coloured ones.

LEDs dim in the same way as bulbs - if you want to be flash (pun not intended) and have an adjustable square wave generator feeding them then fine, but a rheostat still works as well

            Hi Stuart,

Don't bother with these for the Stag. I tried it and took them out again. They are in a drawer in my garage if you want them. The rear bulb holders in the Stag are too deeply recessed for the rear facing LEDs which are buried and don't shine on the reflector. You therefore get a small 50p sized light that is only visible from directly behind, rather than a light that fills the reflector. I also tried coloured ones and removed the filters, but no better.

If you do go this way you can replace the rear indicator bulbs without modification as the front bulbs and repeaters will draw sufficient current, but you cannot change front and rears without using the additional resistors.

              Hi Dave

I agree if fitted LED and found them useless :X- i also removed them and they are also in my spares box.

Did buy some of these E10 Bulbs for the instruments and they work well with the rheostat dimmer.

You can get them in white, green, blue, red etc

where did you get the instrument LEDs from and how much?

                cheers

It is possible to dim LEDs, you just have to control the current through them (using a resistor) or as Krytem says you can go to the trouble of driving them with an adjustable squarewave.

as I said I would fiercly bright duringing daylight so that I can see them

again where did you get them and how much

Yes please, these are new to me.

I've tried LEDsusing the original rheostat but they're either on or off. They still won't allow the oil/brake system to work. Martin.

Sorry Martin I forgot about the requirements of the brake/oil warning lights, it should still be possible to get it all to work OK but might need a few extra resistors to get the current right.

This "mod" is fairly high up on my list so when I've had a play and got them working with the rheostat and the brake/oil bit I'll post my solution.

                            Thank Gary,

Worth a punt at that price. I was a bit confused and wondered who LIONEL was, turns out he is a model train!!

Have just ordered some so we will see how I get on.

Hi Gary, to be honest, I'm a bit concerned about the security issues surrounding buying abroad, and I don't have a PayPal account, I would very much like to have some of these. Perhaps I'm being too cautious, Iwould very muchappreciate any thoughts or advice from you, or others. Are we certain they are DC ? :? Martin.
