Core plug has gone AWOL

About a mile from home on Saturday morning a core plug went absent without leave. There was much steam escaping from under the bonnet, but at least I wasn't half way up Mont Blanc.

Has anybody got any tips on fitting the new plug? The plug, or more correctly 'socket', in question is just above the spark plugs between numbers 1 and 3 cylinders, and there's not a lot of room to swing a hammer down there.

The other slight query I have concerns the diameter of the plug. The Parts Manual and Rimmer's catalogue list two sizes. One is 1.055" and the other 1.655", but the diameter of the plug I have that seems to fit the socket in the block is about 1.3".

Just another of those little mysteries that Triumph built into the Stag all those years ago to keep us on our toes.

Hi Robert

I'd be a bit worried as to the reason a core plug came out .The usual reason would be a frozen head with no anti freeze.I know the weather has been bad but it has stayed above 0 deg (Just).

Other reasons could be very high preasure in the system or Core plug was too small or very badly corroded.Not sure which one i'd be hoping for .

or maybe i worry too much.

Hi Robert

I must have spent hours trying to hammer a new core plug into the heads after one of mine rusted through, never managed it. Took the head off in the end. (probably not the answer you wanted)

Well, the heads were off recently for a rebuild so if they have to come off again it (hopefully) won't be too much of a problem.
