hi all, just in the process of restoring front grill and done all the hard work now finishing off with top coat but don't like the "shiny" look of the satin black paint, was the original finish in matt black not satin. mine was dull as ditch water and chipped to buggery hence the refurb so difficult to tell what it was originally, I could just go with what I like but want it to look right too. any tips would be helpful. thanks. pete.c:?

Hi Pete
I have just done mine and very pleased. I previously did it in matt black and although maybe original, it always looked dusty and rough to the touch and then faded. I then did it in Satin Black and although as you say, there is a sheen finish, it feels smoother and will stay fresh looking so wont have to do it again.
Itsa personal thing, but I am glad I changed as it all looks new

pcoleman wrote:Hi Pete, originally it was matt black, like the tail panel, after a few washes it takes on a dull lustre which looks perfect, you shouldn't have any probs getting a smooth finish. Don't forget to start with etch primer, the only one I found that will stick to anodised aluminium is the Bilt Hamber one.hi all, just in the process of restoring front grill and done all the hard work now finishing off with top coat but don't like the "shiny" look of the satin black paint, was the original finish in matt black not satin. mine was dull as ditch water and chipped to buggery hence the refurb so difficult to tell what it was originally, I could just go with what I like but want it to look right too. any tips would be helpful. thanks. pete.c:?

I want to refurb my grill. At the moment it is black but as it is an early MK1 I think it should be grey - am I correct?
If so what shade of grey? Should it be the same shade as the background to the three "stag" badges?
Thanks
Roger

The reason I asked was because on the website under the section on MK1 & 2 differences it says this:
"The background colour of the grille and rear quarter emblems was changed from silvergrey to black. "
Anyone know if this was true?
