    Rear Wheel Bearing Spanners available.

Just had some spanners made to allow me to "attack" the rear of my Stag within the next few weeks. Spanners only cost me normal pint ( not what you know, it's who you know ) so if anyone in the south west isfitting or adjusting the rear wheel bearings andwould like the loan of them plus a dial gauge you are welcome. Collect from Plymouth ( near Tamar Bridge ) or I could get them to Exeter area on most Tursdays. Nocharge of course.

I would like to thank the person who sent me the dimensions some time ago, very sorry I have forgotton your name so credit goes to you.

    Don.

    Nice spanners!

Just wondering if at least one of them has a very long handle because compressing the collapsible spacer requires some considerable effort. If not, you'll need to find a piece of tube that will go over the handle and when you're setting the end float sometimes you need to leave a margin before tightening the lock nut as the end float can be lost during this stage - even with another spanner holding the adjusting nut. If you lose the end float you'll have to strip the hub because you'll no longer be able to get the correct pre-load on the bearing.

      Hi Don

I have some one who could knock me up a couple

Do you know if they were hardened:shock:

Spanners I have are 21" long. While I have not used them yet I should think they are long enough. The ones I had made did not need to be hardened as they were made of hard metal, handy to know someone who was able to cut them using a Plasma cutter.

Dimensions below. Not my picture, credit goes to 15tag who posted this

          Don

Thanks to you and 15tag for the diagram

I might have missed it but could you confirm the thickness of the material.

          cheers

I measured the handle on mine and it's close to 21" but whenever I need a bit more leverage, I just slide a long bar over it. The thin adjusting nut spanner doesn't need to be as hefty.

I'll measure the thickness of the plate used to make the spanner and see if that's similar to Don's.

The picture shows 100X10 bar. That's 100x10mm thick!

                These did the job.

It is debateable if the collapsable spacer achieves anything in the rear hubs.

The inner races both contact a shoulder, so what does the 'collapsable spacer' add?

I was first alerted to this by David Manners (Jaguar / mg / triumph ) when I went to get a collapsable spacer, the parts guy said 'you know that part isnt actually required?'

Looking at the cross section, I tend to agree.

One spanner in 5mm thick, the other in 3mm thick.

The hardening of the spanners isnt really necessary unless you are doing a lot of hubs!

It would appear that the dimensions I was givenwere not accurate. If someone has a pair of these and has used them so knows they are correct could you please give me the sizes.

All I need is the two dimensions, i.e.

AF ( across the flats ) and the thickness. I read that there could be two thicknesses but it would be nice ( and easier ) if I had one thickness size so they could be cut from the same sheet.

                  Many thanks, Don Kennedy

P.S. The ones I have are 10mm thick. I'm sure that thedimensions as supplied must have been tried, is it me doing something wrong. Must admit my brain cell is into melt down following a weekend of 10 hours Saturday and 10 hours Sunday finishing off the front end rebuild and almost finishing off the rear end. Never doing this stuff again ( until next time ).
