Sticking choke

I have the common problem of a sticking choke -ie the mechanism on the left hand carb will not return to base. It is a bit of a nuisance having to push it back manually after the engine has warmed up

My understanding is that the mechanism is catching on the screw beneath it, so it would seem sensible to turn down the screw and then perhaps apply some grease all round.

If this is not the correct thing to do I should be grateful from advice from one of you master technicians out there. Many thanks.

Don't reset the screw (unless its wrongly set)! The function of the screw is to set the fast idle (FI) speed when the choke knob is pulled. It does this by pushing onto the cam on the LH carb. Yes I know it can stick but the answer is to ensure the cam is not bent sideways, and is greased; also ensure the inner wire of the choke cable is straight, not kinked, and is properly adjusted; if the cable is too slack it will not release properly.

Check in the manual for proper adjustment of the fast idle cam, and bend the cam plate if the FI screw is not centred on the cam.

TIP: Note also that when using the choke always depress the accelerator pedal as this helps the choke cam to deploy and release more easily. If you yank on the choke cable without pressing the accelerator you will put a strain on the cables etc.

It sounds like you have a slightly sticking shaft, have the carbs been rebuilt recently?

V Mad is correct you must depress the throttle before pulling the choke out so strian is not placed on the cables.

I would also suggets you get a cable oiler (cylce shop etc) and oil the cables.
