    Door Handles

    Hi All

Fitted a new door handle (chrome) tonight which I purchased from E J Ward last year.

All was going well until I came to refit the lock remote mechanism locating pin which measures 4mm the hole also measured 4mm!!

Luckily I had a 4.5mm drill so drilled the hole out and fitted the mechanism

Then the next problem the cast threaded holes for the 2 set screws were not in the same position as the original so had to get a round file and file the door skin a little until it fitted:shock:

The next problem is down to me refitted it all including the door card then found I had put the barrel on wrong as it locks but does not unlock:?

Gave up for the night now and will fix tomorrow! Looks nice though!

        Hi all

I fitted some new ones last year and the groove along the top was too narrow to slot onto the door skin,so I had to file the door slightly to get them to fit.Why cant they make a direct copy of the originals I dont know, they seem like they go out of their way to just change something slightly so we dont have a easy time of it.

I notice on ebay the other day someone was selling a stag and in the description it said that the door handles were corroded but new oneswere available and were cheap to buy,I dont call £45 a side cheap unless this chap knew somewhere better to buy them from than me.

Monkey metal don`t seem to rechrome very well if they are badly pitted....

It is the same for the air intake grill it still shows the pits after beeing rechromed.

              Hi Bruce

Its that strange type of metal, which scabs up,which means sometimes it comes back from the platers still a bit scabby if you know what I mean.

Don't forget that door handles and door skins were different for Mk1 and Mk2 Stags.Changed around LD21883.

Most suppliers now only list one handle bowl now, and the replacementdoor skins are all to the later style (including SOCTFL). If you have been having these problems it could be because you are trying to fit Mk2 bowls to Mk1 skins, or vice versa.

Hi all, the handle bowls, fresh air grills etc. are made of Mazak, it's a cheap alloy that was easy to cast but evenmild vineger will corrode it. It's entirely dependant on the quality of the plating to survive, first sterile clean, ( in a factory ? )copper plated, nickle plated then chrome, the same applies to repairing it, strip to bare metal, grind or dissolve the pits, then it should be heavily copper plated, thick enough to fill upthe pits, polished flat, then re-plated with copper, then nickle and finally chrome, then polished, to do properly it's very expensive, it's almost impossible to do in bulk as each piece has to be carefully checked through each process, boring ? sorry. I did look at setting up to produce repaired items but the costs are horrendous and the DIY products, pot metal repair etc. don't work. Some people are looking at re-casting in brass, I hope their successful. Martin.

Mick from EJ Ward told me at Stoneleigh that they were in talks with the man who makes their s/steel bumpers (in Vietnam!) about casting the front air intake in brass and then chrome plating. Don't know if this has progressed any yet.

                      Hello Dave,

Are we talking about Harrington Group here? I had s/s bumpers made for my TR6 by them. They are simply gorgeous and even inexpensive - compared to the costs of rechroming.

                      So I hope this works.

                      Kind regards, Dieter.

                        Hi Dieter,

EJ Ward sell them in the UK http://www.ejward.co.uk/

If you look at the photos of BigJ's Stag (http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/forum1/353.html) he has them fitted. I saw them at Stoneleigh and they do look very much like chrome.

                          Hi All

Fitted the other (NS) door handle yesterday and encountered more problems with the quality of the parts:X.

This time I had to drill the 4.9mm hole as per the other handle for the main pin holding the black handle, but I also had to spend an hour and a bit filing the flashing in the lock barrel hole.

It measured 13.5mm instead of 14mm and as usual I did not have the right size drill!

Got it all done and they look really good but it's a shame people can not make a quality product anymore:?

                          Stuart

Hi, hope you covered everything with masses of grease as they will immediately start to eat themselves where the chrome has been removed. Martin.
