    STEERING COLUMN CONCERNS!

    Hi Guys!

All your grey matter needed! My MK2 steering acting up... column has developed a lot of "orbital" play at steering wheel end to this end I have noticed that that the left and right lock has a tendency to jam slightly (bit concening)- I believe the is a bushing between the inner and outer column? that could be iffy?

Has anyone out there tackled this job or would welcome and related comment! am sure good ol D.J.T and others have the answers!!!

    :dude:mAY YOUR V8s burble!!!

    Hi Phil,

Mine have also gone, and I need to replace them before its nextMoT. I got my bushes from Rimmer's, as I believe that they are the only ones that currentlyhave stock. I've been told it is a fiddly job, especially if you've had an alarm fitted - they seem to take the electrical supply from the column loom, and it makesthe job moredifficult. I've been putting it off for a rainy day, but when it rained I found something else to do!

I did this job a couple of years ago, it all came apart quite easily, but getting the new bushes in and working propely was a game. Leyland original bushes seem to be made from white nylon, these had broken up completely. The rimmers replacements were made from some sort of silicone rubber. I assembled them with white grease but they were a very tight fit and the column adjustment is now very tight indeed. I decided this was a small price to pay for a solid steering column. You normally only set this adjustment once anyway, unless different drivers use the car regularly.

Mine's the same, quite bad with lots of lost motion.

Got one of Tony Harts top rings .Took it apart to find it already had one .Chanced an MOT and it passed (not even an advisory)

Complete strip down on the cards for the winter now.

            Hi Dave!

I stripped column down yesterday- pretty straightforward -when I dropped the lower nacele low and behold-full of small bearings!

The upper one in the casting behind wheel had failed! handbook is not too clear how to shift- I ended inverting whole column- spinning on steering locknut then tap complete assembly down towards wheel end- this shifted the upper out

Once off found a suitable wide chisel and belted the other one which promptly fell out!- I also found the upper starwasher knackered! new bits coming from RIMMERS

look after the other wavy washer etc.- dont appear readily available! whole job bout £32 took me bout 1hr!

            Hope of use!!

            :dude:cheers!
