    Differntial Whine

I am interested to hear more about the much talked about Stag whining differential.I think I have it. I only hear it when I have the top up an.d it is coming form the rear of the car.

    How does it usually sound?

Is there a better to diagnose the issue?

What is the best aproach to fix it. Have looked atthe BMW diff but at 1500UK Pounds seems rather expensive is it worth it. Is it a job that one can fix yourself or is specialist equipment needed?

    thx

I had a bad whine in the Stag last night going to the area meeting. It didn't stop untill I put the hood up and the heater on.

But seriously, is the diff whine a job one can fix oneself or should I just replace it?

What have others done in the past?

If you can't live with the diff whine, you need to replace the diff. Even professionally rebuilt diffs can whine so its def not a DIY job to try to correct it.

Problem is where can you get a whine free one? Try asking the companies that sell them; I don't think they will give any guaratee that a new one will not whine.

One option is to go for a Weslake (BMW) one at £1500!

My diff whines a little at about 50mph. It sounds like a high pitched howling sound, or a high pitched humming sound.

I cant justify the 1500 quid.
So most people just live with it?

                Hi Brian/Steve

Sometimes Diff whine (high pitched drumming) can be confused with a worn out quill shaft bearing!

I would replace this first before condemning the diff!

Whine, Drumming etc. Is there any way of knowing what is responsible for what noise. Example, I have been doing a thing or two ( or more )to my Stag so as it is getting quieter I notice different noises. I notice a whine coming from the rear but is there when slight power on from about 50mph but lift off and the noise goes.Does not seem like a"normal" diff whine to me although I not familar with the type on the Triumphs.Any thoughts on where this noise is coming from.

I have never heard the term quill shaft bearing before?

If it is in the gearbox then I can rule this out as I have
just changed the gearbox and I know this is fine.

Where is the Quill shaft bearing located and how do you check it?

                      Hi Steve

The quill shaft bearing lives in the extension nose in front of the diff and is a fairly easy job to replace.

                        Thanks for the great info.

I think I will get the part ordered and give it a go.

I know it is very difficult togive advise aboutproblems like " A Noise " on a message board but is there a way to diagnose where a noise could be coming from. i.e. constant noise, not dependant on power on / overrun, noise only with power on, noise only at overrun etc. The noise coming from the rear of my Stag is not what I would call excessive but being a picky sod I would like to rectify it if possible although looking at other messages via search it would appear that this may be something I have to live with as it is as good as it is going to get on a Stag. I find it difficult to believe that this has not been investigated and sortedin the past if this is such a common problem. I know about the BMW diff conversion but this Car is a "toy" and a bit of fun, not a piggy bank with a hole in the bottom. There are some additives that can beplaced in gearboxes / diffs etc that say whine is reduced, although I have never beena greatfan of these additives, anyone tried and been happy with the results ?.Any suggestions or comments welcome.

                          Many thanks, Don Kennedy

I don't know them personally, but Hardy Engineering seem to have a good reputation for rebuilding Whine free Stag Diffs. I am sure a forum search will pull up some contact details.

We need a set of good calibrated whines on UTube to compare against .
