    Hi, Phil,

Yes they can be a pain to remove if they have been on a while, due to the slightly tapered spline. If you have removed the centre nut and washer, sit in the seat and give the wheel a good blow towards you with the palms of both hands. Alternatively get someone to pull steadiily on the wheel whilst you use a suitable drift and lump hammer to tap the steering column spindle sharply. If this doesn't work you may need a puller that will hook behind the wheel and bear on the shaft spindle.

You don't want to get too violent with the steering column and heavy hammers for fear of damage.

Your other post refers to 'orbital movement' at the wheel. There is a bush at the top that is held in by a star washer. When you have the wheel off, you can tap this washer back down the column with a suitable drift. If this doen't fix it then you can buy a better support from Tony Hart (eBay)

There are bushes within the steering column that can be replaced, but this requires removal of the column for strip-down.

Maybe too late now but I learned never to remove the nut, only loosen it a few turns, otherwise a visit to the dentist maybe required if the wheel flies off.

:dude:Wise words indeed! - I did shift in due course lots of WD40 helped! and rebuilt my steering column with new upper bushes- they just press in! ...bit annoyin though these bushes were not cheap and there is still bit of play in upper stem- but believe this can be common?

Another word of wisdom. avoid hitting the top of the column - the metal is soft and thread very fine - you will never get the nut back on......

The replacement lock ring is good and does remove the play in bushes but need to ensure it is seated hard down on bush - with all replaced, and grubscrews loosish get someone to pul hard on steering wheel while gently tapping ring down on bush and tightening screws.
