I have just received my renewalfrom RH Insurance (Club scheme). Enclosed with the renewal is a Key Facts sheet from Equity Red Star in which it says "loss or damage by theft or attempted theft will NOT be covered if the car has been left with the roof open (in the case of a convertible vehicle). This means if you are out for a drive be it on your own or with a club event and you stop for a pint,a pub lunch,a walk or any reason and you leave your car withoutputting up thesoft top you MAY not be covered if your car is stolen. (DO YOU TRUST INSURANCE COMPANIES IF THEY HAVE TO PAY OUT ? ) Does anyone know of an insurance company that will cover for theft in these circumstances ? I do have an immobiliser fitted.I guess the same clause applies to any Equity red star policy.

Hi Dayton, and welcome to the forum.
That is quite a first post:shock:.
I was with the Club scheme last year, but I had to look elsewhere when I renewed as I couldn't keep below their 5000 mile limit. I will be checking my own policy shortly!

Dave

I insure my Stag along with 3 other "classics" through AON. The policy itself is with Royal and Sun Alliance. Can't find any clause in my policy document saying that a convertable must have the roof up for a theft claim to be valid. Does say any valuables must be in a locked glovebox or the boot.
I paid £132 at the last renewal - Class I use (includes business) and unlimited mileage. Agreed value at £5000 (thats probably a bit low now that it all seems to work)
I have also just checked my wifes insurance on her MX5. Its with Swiftcover (Axa) and that specifically says that theft is NOT covered if any roof opening is left open
She never leaves it open any way is it only takes 3 seconds to put the hood down and about 5 to put it back up:P - seriously - think its about 3 minutes and 5 minutes on the Stag:X
As always with insurance - read the small print.
Roger
Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!

Welcome to the forum.
thank you for pointing it out - I have only just renewed mine and have just looked at the paper work and you are right!!!:X
What sort of lousy club scheme is this for a club that has convertible cars!!! I will be trying to get my money back in the morning and see if I can organise better insurance with someone else!:X
Went with the club scheme as I assumed it would be the best sort of cover for our cars. Why is the club promoting this company??

I have just been through my current insurance policy. Not good.
I am currently insured through Lancaster. I quote - under "What is not Insured" - "Loss of or damage to your unoccupied car if it is unlocked or the windows or roof opening are open or the keys are in or on the car".
It does say "Roof opening" and not Roof though so does this define a sun roof and not a convertable roof?
I wonder if this clause is pretty much universal? Does anyone out there have insurance that covers them for vehicle theft with the roof down?

What a load of tosh!
Whether you leave the soft top up or down will make sod all difference to your car being nicked! Lets face it, the soft top is not a secure defence is it. Best defence is an immobiliser.
As regards damage whilst the car is parked, do they cover you fordamage to the soft top if it is up? If its down and stowed it can't be damaged unless somebody goes to the trouble of popping up the tonneau cover.

I have spoken to RH this morning, they say that as long as the car is locked you have taken reasonable precautions, they say its referring to scenarios like leaving it parked all night outside with the top down rather than, for example, at a show with the top down, ie. if you can demonstrate that you have taken sensible precautions it is covered.
All seems a bit open ended to me, all seems to be at their discretion. Still a bit worrying.:?

My car is insured by Chaucer through Carole Nash. It's not covered against theft if "your vehicle windows are left open or your keys are left in, on or about your vehicle while it is unattended or unoccupied", no mention of leaving the roof down......however I suspect they would contest if anything did happen.

This is a surprise to me to, also on cars not covered with sunroofs left open (my other car). I often leave the car with roof off but take care on where its left, whats in it and of course immobilised. I even take the rotor arm out when left in the garage for extended periods just in case. Keys left in the car aside as if we're that daft, I guess its down to the claimant to not mention the roof was down or open. As you say, if some undesirable is going to pinch it, a fabric roof is not going to stop them.
