    MK1 Warning Light Cluster

I've been playing around with my instruments panel lighting as it was so dim it was useless - partly due to a duff rheostat. I've nearly got that sorted and have moved onto the warning light cluster which is similarly useless in anything other than total darkness. When I dismanteled it there were a variety of coloured "wedges" just behind the front glass bit. (Green for indicators, red for ign & oil, blue for main beam etc.) If I remove them the lights are just about bright enough to be seen in daylight.

Should the warning light cluster have coloured lights or do they just light up white??

    Thanks

    Hi Roger,

The coloured 'wedges' are meant to be there. If the lights are really dim, then it could be:
    • Old bulbs - replace
    • Wrong bulbs - replace
    • Poor Contacts - clean
    • Dirty Glass - clean

Generally Mk1 instruments weren't very bright, but the warning cluster should be visible, other than on sunny days when reflected light will make them invisible.

As for the remaining instruments, I found that painting the inside of the cans with white primer made a big improvement. Others have replaced the conventional bulbs with LEDs to good effect.

      Thanks Dave,

I have fitted LEDs to the instruments but because the beam from them projects forwards at quite a narrow angle a lot of the "brightness" is lost. I have just got a new lot which are really bright - still got spots in front of my eyes where I looked straight at them

I only asked about the coloured wedges because they looked a bit home made and the blue main beam one is not really translucent at all

The bulbs and contacts are all OK so I am going to fit the newLEDs to them - I know I'll have a bit of a fiddle getting the oil and brake warning lights working correctly.

I guess it must be my eyesight that's failing rather then the lights on the Stag

Funny you should say that;....it only came on after I changed the oil last week with Halfords classic oil, which is green....prior to this when the ignition was switched on no oil light showed.
