    Modified brake servo

    Hi Guys

Has anyone fitted the modified brake servo kit supplied by monarch. How difficult is the mod (I know you have to move the clutch master cylinder ).Is it worth doing as I have already fitted Green Stuff pads ,s/s flexibles and changed to silicon oil but still cant lock up the wheels. My wife enjoys driving the car but finds the brakes heavy

Then you have something wrong, I have a standard setup, with the exception of stainless braided hoses and the brakes lock up without too much problem. The pedal is heavier than a modern car but not by that much, you should perhaps cure the fault rather than mask it with a more powerful servo? (Might be cheaper too!) Perhaps thefront calipers are partly seized, do you lose any fluid?

I fitted one last year, I can't comment on moving the clutch because I've got an auto.

It's a vast improvement on my old one, but that was faulty and I had no back brakes at all!

You have to 'modify' the inner wing to get the BMW unit to fit, and it's a bit fiddly drilling the new mounting holes.

Also, if I remember correctly you have to do a bit of welding to fit the kit to a manual.

        Hi Dave

I've checked the calipers andthey all free and I don't loose any oilNo leaks on the cylinders or unions the pedal operates near the top of the travel and isn't spongy The only thing I can think of is that the servo isn't working as well as it should

I think the BMW servo is a great improvement over standard - new not recon replacement master cylinders are easier to get too from the local Bee Em emporium.

And I can lock all 4 wheels easily in the dry if I really want too - good mod in my book

Fair nuff! Sounds like a bit of hassle fitting the BMW one though, good luck!

              Hi Kryten

What are the problems doing the mod. ie do you have to do any welding.(would be a bit hairy welding to the bulkhead on a built up car) , I should hate to set fire to the wiring at the back of the dash. I wouldn't expect any probs redrilling etc

                  Hi Tony

I've managed to lay my hands on the fitting instructions that came with my kit.

You have to remove the pedal box and then weld the new clutch mounting bracket to it, then you re-fit the pedal box and drill new holes through the bulkhead, you get a re-inforcing plate for the Brake M/C because the holes are in a different place.

So no welding needed on the car.
