    Hi

In a couple of weekends, June 12 - 15, I'm off on a 450 (approx) mile run fromA to Z, starting in Andover and ending in Zeals.

The aim is to raise money for Naomi House and for Shelter by driving to locations in alphabetical order, Andover, Basingstoke, Checkendon, Dorchester (Oxon), ... Yetminster and Zeals.

I'd like other classic cars to join me, for one or more days.

I'm just finalising a few points but highlights will include visits to Milestones Museum in Basingstoke, Highworth's History Day, Berwick St James village fete, Haynes Motor Museum and various other interesting or unusual venues. I'm trying to arrange something at each location, such as the highest navigable point on the Thames, for example!

If you'd like to know more (without commitment) or make a donation, please e-mail me at pamaz@live.co.uk or add to this thread.

Hope to hear from you soon

    Peter

      Hi Peter,

There is a classic car show at Filkins (very close to Lechlade - highest navigable point on the Thames) on 14th June. There should be about 100 classics there.

Broughton-cum-Filkins was originally a Saxon village, but it is believed that there may have been a settlement here much earlier. Indeed the Roman road Akeman Street passes a couple of miles to the north, and there is evidence of several trackways converging nearby and leading down to the river Thames at what is now Lechlade. To expand on my comment above re 'free' - I'm asking for a donation of £10 a day per car which will go in full to the charities Naomi House and Shelter or come for all 4 days for £30.

This doesn't include entrance fees where relevant, although I am trying to negotiate discounts.

            Regards

            Peter

At Checkendon, theres nothing there really apart from Norman Cox's timber yard I think. The Black Horse is there still, one of Britains best 'secret' pubs. All on my favourite cycle route. Some ex inmates live in our village

                Hi Al

Yes, looking at Google Earth and thewebsite http://www.polishresettlementcampsin...checkendon.htmand comparing the maps it looks as though there's little, if anything left of the old Polish camp but seeing as it closed in the late 50s early 60s I guess that's not surprising! Good point about the pub - it also gets a mention on the above site.

This run started off as a tripfor my wife and myself to villages and towns that we wouldn't normallyvisit. It then became a challenge to find something interesting in each place while maintaining the A - Z theme. And the Polish camp was something I don't recall being aware of.

                Thanks for your input.

If you, or anyone, can't make a whole day it would be interesting to meet peopleen route. When I've finalised (yep, running out of time!) the venues and times I'll publish them here.

                Peter

                  Sorry Peter,

We are away camping in Somerset that weekend, but in Checkendon check out the Church which is very nice, and the Black Horse if its open. The landlord does amazing oil paintings of Aircraft, even the Vulcan, and Red Kites of course. Follow Sustrans Cycle path 5 signs towards Wallingford from the Black Horse. You will be going through some cracking country

At Dorchester the Abbey is nice and just up the road is an amazing Antiques shop. At East Hagbourne is the farm where I get my sausages made by the farmers Mrs, and they have fantastic alotments which are open to the public next weekend.

Its sad what happened to Naomi House, Ill send a contribution

                  Al

                    Hi Peter,

I received the email that you sent tosome of the Area Coordinators. I have forwarded it to several of our local members to see if we can get you some support between Upottery and Exmouth. Can't promise anything yet, but I hope we can manage something.

                    Good Luck.

                        Hi

When Iceland went into meltdown Naomi house 'lost' £5m. At first I was shocked that they have so much cash sitting in an account but after a bit of thought realised that the interest from the deposits is what funds most of their activities.

Without those deposits to continue running would be very difficult and Naomi House has had to put one project on hold for the time being, I believe.

The small fund raisersare what builds up these reserves and enables the interest to fund the project.

This, I guess, is true of many large charities.

I hope to be able to do some small bit to help them get back on track.

I have now set up Justgiving accounts for both Naomi House and Shelter (although the Shelter one needs a bit of work you can still donate!)

                        http://www.justgiving.com/PamAZ-Shelter

I'm aiming to raise £8,500 overall through this and other schemes so every little bit helps!

                        Thanks for your interest.

Thanks very much to Al Stag - he's the first person to donate to my fund raising and I'm truly grateful.

                          Thanks again Al
