    HID Lights

    Hi Guys

Anyone out there fitted a HID conversion kit - see the prices are getting within striking distance (around £60) so was wondering if they are worth the effort?

Hiya Gary, I've not fitted them, but have been interested for some time. I understand there may be a light scatter problem because of our lens design, I believe there may also be a legal issue where they are required to be fitted with a self dipping & self levelling system. There are many different designs about and I would be reluctant to buy one because it is the cheapest. The output of the higher rated onesis ace, and if anyone has successfullytested a set with our lamps I would love to hear about it. Martin.

Martin is right about the legality issue. The official view is that aftermarket kits should comply with original fit that is with auto wash and levelling. In practice this is usually not possible. These requirements are relaxed for motorbikes and I have sold many kits to police bikers and have been invited to exhibit at "bikesafe" exhibitions. They pass MOT tests if adjusted correctly.
I have a Cibie headlight conversion with HID on my Stag and am pleased with it, main beam has to be used with great respect!!
You get what you pay for many e bay kits have brick sized ballasts and no guarantee. 35 watt systems are all you need, they give 3 times brightness, 6 times life and almost half power consumption of a 55 watt halogen bulb. There are 50watt HIDs on sale but they are at limit of the technology.

        Hi John

I have the Cibie conversion already and was considering either replacing the H1 lamps with H4 so both lights are on at once (Would fit relays etc.) or fitting the HID kit?

Think i will go with option 1 as i don't want the MOT Police on my case

          Hi Gary.
Re MOT. Both halogen and HID lamps have to be correcty adjusted There is no difference. The 4 x4 H4 halogen option will.cost you 2 lamp units, relays and wiring. You will not get as much light as with HID and current consumption on dip will be around 18 amps against 7 amps for HID.
          Your call.
          John.
