Auto Box - BW35 Gear change speed

Just got my Stag on the road (it was laid up in 1990 before i bought it as a non runner) and i wondered,if driving on a flat road,at what speeds does the gear box change gear 1st>2nd>3rd, and how many engine revs at 60mph ish.
I understand the figures will be approx, but it will give me an idea if the gearbox is doing what it should.
    Cheers

Hello SGN and welcome to the land of the lost. Good to hear you're on the road, another Stag shining in the sun. Mine is a BW 35 but I believe the figures are very similar. In top, the figure is 20 mph per 1000 rpm, ie, 60 mph is 3000 rpm. On a light or trailing throttle, she should slip into top at about 25 mph, the other changes I can't recall, but if doing the above then there's not much wrong. There is a hold feature that some auto owners don't know about, if you move off in second instead of drive, the trans will hold onto first for much longer, useful at the lights and saves you throwing petrol out of the exhaust by using kickdown. Martin. P.S. nice colour !

      Officially.......BW35

      Light throttle 1-2 8-12 2-3 12-16
      Part Throttle 3-2 22-30
      Kickdown (D) 1-2 34-42 2-3 64-70 3-2 56-66

      BW65

      Light Throttle 1-2 6-10 2-3 9-21
      Part Throttle 3-2 43 max
      Kickdown 1-2 37-47 2-3 63-72

In reality add at least 20% to this for general wear and tear and speedo inaccuracy

The 35 is a tough but very crude gearbox so don't expect too much from it

Thanks for the info, now i have some ball park figures to go by.It is changing up and down, but i've only done around 40mls so far and i had nothing to gauge it against. It hadn't moved for 17 years before i got it,fingers crossed it seems to be ok.

Very kind of you. Just remember, Stag owners NEVER ask stupid questions ! We're all at different levels of knowledge and experience, luckily we have a couple of experts who are patient and forebearing, and there's masses of DIY experience out there. Once again, welcome. Martin.
