    Alarm - and Central Locking!

    Hi,

just found out i am due another bill! Woo hoo, they are coming thick and fast! Lucky i had a decent reserve fund when i bought the Stag for cheaper than i expected!

My immobiliser is not CAT3. Has anyone fitted a central locking kit with their alarms - that is one mod con I miss!

I notice Monarch have a CAT 2 kit, about £230 when you get all the bits. Anyone tried this or similar?

    Clara,

A Cat 3 immobiliser is a Mechanical one, such as an approved steering wheel lock.

A Cat 2 immobiliser is an electronic/electromechanical immobiliser - no alarm, although you can get a Cat 2-1 alarm upgrade for some.

Cat 1 refers to a combined electronic alarm and immobiliser.

    See http://www.thatcham.org/security/index.jsp?page=75for more info.

Some systems include c/locking, or the ability to add this on seperately. The club insurance used to insist on a Cat 2 as a minimum, but have removed this requirement now. Many other Classic Insurance policies have done the same.

It is possible to buy Cat 2 systems for around £40 for a touch pad type, or £60 for a transponder type. This does not include fitting and, therefore, signed certificate (unless you can find a friendly auto-electrician to sign the cert for you ).

C/locking would be a fair bit extra. One could argue that the Stag already has central locking - I can reach both doors from the driver's seat .

thanks for clearing that up!My insurance insists on an immobiliser, i must have the wrong CAT! I sent the certificate, but they sent it back saying it wasn't Thatcham approved. It must be too old.

(Its the sort that looks like the old large phono head phones jack! you plug it in to disable the immobilser)

I dont mind upgrading, i dont have a spare and it would be just as much if god forbid i ever lost the immobiliser key, it might also keep some unwanted attention away from the car if its a decent alarm. (I have lost 2 radios in 18 months since i moved to London!)

Dave, you're correct that the insurance used to demand CAT2 was fitted andI believe they've since removed this requirement, however interestingly its still a requirement on my insurance renewal that its in place and used.

I managed to buy a CAT2 device (very hard) and obtained broker agreement that I could fit and sign off. However I believe the CAT" requirement is that its "professionally" fitted so can only ask.My DIY desire was that I knew how and where it was fitted in case it went wrong on some dark and dingy back road.....

Fully agree with this. I had an alarm/immobiliser fitted until recently. Although it wasn't a Thatcham approved item (wires not all black, would be one reason it's not on their list), my insurance company accepted it on the basis that only I knew where it was fitted, and what it immobilised. It also had a microwave sensor that covered the entire inside, and was effective even with the roof down. It recently stopped working, however, as it would not receive the signal from either of the remote fobs, despite changing batteries, etc.

I now have a fully approved Thatcham cat 2 transponder system on board.

Anyone who wants to add alarms and/or central locking mght like to look at Maplin www.mapln.co.uk They sell all the parts at a very reasonable cost and I believe they have new models due out. I am waiting for these to look at htem with a view to fitting to my Stag.
