    Would not Start

Hi, Tried starting her up after a 10 day rest, have fitted uprated shafts new plugsand lower steering cover and when it came to start up time... nothing !. Battery fully charged Ign, oil, and choke light on but nothing not even a click. Tried the usual checks but to no avail.

Rang Russ for advice, who suggested I by-passed the inhibitor ( Auto ) and if that failed then to test wiring back to ignition switch. Well this is what it was.......Mr Botch it (whom ever owned the car before me) had fitted a new Ignition switch and had very professionally half crimped/ sticky taped the Ignition wiring under the dash ( White/Red thick cables etc ). When I was fitting the lower steering cover for the wiring I must have disturbed them...... They were all sticky taped together !!:shock:Sorry I forgot to mention not sticky tape Masking Tape !!!!

My old spitfire had some wiring issues when i first bought it, i found that a previous owner had used 2 core and 3 core house old electrical cable to make a new wiring loom for the headlights and indicators:shock:

Glad you got it sorted Sukh - you were perfectly capable of sorting it, just needed pointing in the right direction

I has a Stag where the PO had replaced all the dash wire with a red wire. Fault finding was a nightmare.

POs have a lot to answer for!

Back in the late 70s I had to do some electrical fault finding on a 1973 Lada.......every wire on the car was pink - with a tracer dab of paint at the end of each wire in the appropriate colour to identify the circuit.....

Then the complete knob of an owner thought that steam cleaning the engine bay would help me sort the electrics if all the wiring was clean....... and yes, all the paint tracers came off.........

The following day was fun....... not.....

Membership of the SOC does not necessarily convey great wisdom (unless of course they are a long standing forum user, in which case they may well be Stag wise).
