Any thoughts on a good car alarm that also covers the car when the top is down? I know there are several types including window closure features and central locking which will be a good idea.
I have a Cobra with dual zone microwave detector that works with the roof down and gives a "bugger off, I'm alarmed type" beep when people get too close
There is a central locking and window option for it too
I have the Clifford Concept 650 in mine. It has the microwave detector inside. I had a lot of problems with it when I got it, internal sensor and the siren have both been replaced. sorted now, but I wouldn't buy another one!
If the battery goes flat, the alarm goes off and you can't switch it off until you get the jump leads on to the battery:shock::X.
I'm not a big fan of the "don't get too close/ stand back or I'll shoot" type robocop warning alarms. I wonder if that function can be disabled or not?
Like the idea of the windows closure and locks though.
Some time ago I think it was a "Fox" alarm I had fitted to a modern-ish car, and after about two weeks it would of drained the battery enough so I couldn't start the car. So if I went on holiday I had to leave the alarm off. Hope there's one out there that will last longer than that piece of crap.
My dads Lotus Esprit has one of those Clifford alarms that very annoyingly beeps if you get too close to the car, and you can't turn it off! Certainly no good at a car show.
How many of us take notice when a car alarmsounds as there always seems to be one going off somewhere in a car park. I think most alarms are to make the owner feel more comfortable.
If someone wants your car no alarm in the world is going to stop them taking it. Look at the avatar of Mick, is there any alarm that would stop the car being trailered away and how many of us would challenge the driver of the trailer ?.
Modern day cars have immobilisers that disable the ECU so the key is required to start it although even some ofthese get stolen often to get broken for parts so a car like the Stag would not be much of a challenge to disable and remove any alarm.
No I do not have an answer, cannot even blame modern society as Cars have been stolen for as long as they have been made.
I have fitted the Portman AM-570E (Maplin A65HB), whichis cheapand works well. The instructions are dreadful though. I have sorted it out and will happily publish the info if anyone wants it.It disables the ignition as well as providing alarm on door opening,a shock sensor, and an ultrasonic movement detector. The ultrasonic detector has to be disabled when the roof is off. The ignition immobiliser is best used with electronic ignition, as it is too easy to bypass an immobiliser with a tradtional distributor using a length of wire with a croc clip each end. I have the central locking and this is controlled by the alarm and also works very well. It produces annoying chirps on setting/unsetting, but these can be disabled. It also has a feature to allow the boot to be opened from the remote. I find this useful on my other car, and so I am looking at finding a way to operator the Stag boot lock using a solenoid.
If you look on the maplin web site thereare replacement motorsfor door locks that you can buy individually, you might be able to modify it to fit to a boot release, YD79L or YD78K.
I have some spare door motors, as I bought a four door kit with a view to using one for the boot, but they are too big, and a solenoid is probably better. I have wired up a relay in the boot energised by the alarm, and will use the contacts to feed +12V up the diagonal space between the top skin of the boot and the cross brace. I think I can fit the solenoid in the lock cover pressing. I just need to find the time to play!
