    New member needs help!

Morning all. Recently joined the club as I am looking for a Stag to use regularly. I have done a bit of homework and have a lengthy checklist of what to look for, and have spoken to my local area rep who gave some extra good advice.

I have been to see a few cars, but I have found one that seems to tick the right boxes. I am reluctant to put in an offer until I have looked at more cars, but I dont want to miss out on a good car just for the sake of shopping around.I wonder whether anyone is prepared to stick their neck out and give me an opinion as to whether the car that I have in mind sounds appropriately priced and sounds like a good motor. The car is from a dealer, and is priced just over £5k. Here are my comments:

BODY - has been subject to new front and rear wings in the last 10 years, as well as part of the floorpan and a door skin. Paintwork looks good and even. Some localised rust on front valance but contained and about the size of a 2p piece. Some bubbling at the top of the A post, but appears to be surface rust. Floorpan sound and have lifted carpets to inspect. Inner sill feels solid. Wheel arches are crisp. One door has localised area of corrosion on leading edge, about the size of a 2p, but the inside of the door appears sound. Drain holes on the bottom corners of the same door have been filled and are a little crunchy, but the door skin folds appear to be pretty good all round. Wings all look good, with a little rust apparent at the join of the rear wing to the back end of the sill, but no bubbling just discolouration. Rear suspension mounts are solid. Underneath is solid. It appears to have been patched in a few places, but all areas are solid and well covered in waxoyl. Front outriggers have a little surface rust under the waxoyl but are solid. Sills appear and feel solid. Boot floor is good.

HOOD and TRIM - New mohair hood fitted 2 years ago, and the operation of the hood is fine. Appears to be watertight and no evidence of damp carpets. Rear window is good, and is the zip in type. Was surprised to be able to see daylight through the gap between the rear quarter of the hood and the rear wing. Does this mean the hood doesnt fit properly, or is this just normal? Interior has been refurbished properly and although the seats do not have head rests, they are well padded and very comfy. All guages work fine, elecs all ok, although drivers window is a little slow.

Steering is positive and rack and gaiters look good. No leaks apparent from steering pump.

No evidence of oil leaks of any note from gearbox or axle. Gearchange feels a little notchy, and 2nd gear is harder to engage on downchange than others. Overdrive engages and disengages a little slowly, but smoothly. Axle is a little whiney.

ENGINE - No timing chain noise on start up. No water in the V, and no water in the oil. Engine starts from cold on the button, and ticks over smoothly. No evidence of oil burning under throttle or on overrun. Oil pressure on tickover is about 25 psi (I think), up to around 45 psi when under throttle. I couldnt get the car to get hot even when leaving it to tick over for 5 or 10 minutes. The radiator was hot at the top and bottom, and it warmed up slowly, eventually reaching 80 degrees. It is fitted with a Summer stat apparently. Heater blows hot air fine. No evidence of leaky waterpump or any other part of the cooling system. No oil light on tickover.

Overall, a nice drive. Prior to sale, the car has had new shox, new brakes all round including discs and hoses, new alternator, new screen, a CD player, and an oilservice. In the last 30,000 miles, it has had an engine rebuild, £3k of bodywork, new hood, retrim including a burr walnut dash, new alloys, new clutch.

Apart from those small areas of rust, the whining diff, and the rear bushes needing replacement at some point, I thought it was a good solid motor.

Any thoughts anyone? Anything I should pay closer attention to?

    Many thanks.

    Hi

It looks like you've given it a good going over .can you get one of your local club members to have a look (Just to make sure you havn't missed something). The price seems good if it's as good as you say.It would be a shame to pass it up just to go through the motions of looking at a few othersfirst.

Mechanically it's always a bit of a gamble. If you read some of these threads you'll find stories of newly rebuilt engines failing due to poor quality parts,So once warmed up see if you can give it a good spanking.

You say it warmed up slowly .Just make sure it has a thermostat.you can usually hear the little juggle thing in the statclicking around if you squeeze the top hose quickly when it's cold.

Sounds like it could be a reasonable proposition. A couple of observations:

Soft top frame could be twisted (not uncommon) - have you tried putting the soft top up and down? If you have to wrestle with it that may confirm the frame is bent or broken - can be fixed, but knock some money off if so.

I'd be a little suspicious of a car that takes alongtime to warm up - could be thatthe thermostat has been removed and that generallymeans beware. If you can, take it for a 20+ mile high speed up as manyhills as you can findand see what the temp does including idling fora few minutes afterwards.

Did you check for water in the V after running it for a while?

Is the engine rebuild documented and does it include attending to all the usual suspects e.g. jackshaft, oil pump, big end/main bearing shells, pistons/rings, crankshaft oil seals, water pump, thrust washer, heads/manifold skim, chains, tensioners, sprockets etc?

If it's as good as you describe, them £5k is not a lot of moneyfrom a dealer.

Thanks for the tip. I certainly gave it a good spanking - they sound tasty at higher revs dont they? I think I will go and have another look, and try the thermostat trick. A missing stat did cross my mind, and in my youth, I did try the same trick on my Dolomite Sprint! I am away on holiday from Friday, otherwise I would take my time and look at a few more this weekend, hence the dilemma. I am guessing there is nobody in the Coventry area who can view the car at the drop of a hat.

Bill, thanks for the tips. The frame went up and down fairly smoothly and easily, although I did have to wrestle with it to get the material from out of the recess. That could just be ineptitude though.

Is the stat housing easy to spot on a Stag? On the Sprint, there is a plug right on top, so rather than unbolt a housing, it is easy to undo the cap and peek in.

Cant remember what paperwork went with the engine rebuild . I was working on the basis that it sounded right and didnt blow smoke out of the back under load, but I think I need a closer look. There was no water in the V at any point.

The dealer is prepared to stick a warranty on it in with the price which gives me some confidence, although I have yet to discuss the details.

No such luck I'm afraid - you'll need to investigate by other means. As I'm sure you've already realised. you do need to pay particular attention to the cooling system when buying a Stag. If the cooling system is in fine fettle it will reach normal operating temperature quite quickly (a couple of miles from stone cold at the outside)and fluctuate a needle width or so either side of the N position, possibly rising towards the 3/4 position on a very hot day (can anybody remember them?) and/or after ahigh speedrun up a long motorway incline

:dude:Hi Covsprint!- real interested in your post! and well done! you have done a damn good inspection and raised some vital points! You have described almost a clone of the STAG I bought some 10 months ago in a near same condition! She sounds good on the outset of your description- virtually all you describe reflects the condition of my 74 mk2 when I aquired- am the 13th owner have history of over 14k spent on her to date and all recorded in print- reason I bought her in first place! virtually all panels replaced at some stage and every bush- brakes clutch floor panel sills- again all recorded done to good spec!!!!!! reground orrig engine with only 20k on clock! and to be fair goes like a bomb with no overheat issues which can be common!

In brief my advice as follows- you will get a lot more from the gang! "GOD" IE GOOD OL D.J.T and SEASIDE BILL and Esteemed others will advise am sure!_these guys know the marque backwards! and heed their advice- its appreciated by many- myself included of course!

Price sounds a bit top heavy to me-diff whine common- check for transmission clunks usually uj,s not expensive-check for overheat abs vital!.....some shady types out there will disconnect temp sender while you are viewing!!! been there worn the shirt etc check at your peril-

have a nosey on brake master cyl to see if evidence of contaminated fluid(seals on way out etc) check overdrive- common fault is wiring short to gearlever switch!-

check for wheel bearing play-steering column play(common) but not disastrous-

nb STAGS have very light steering!- check if PDWA switch in circuit in brake line(often disconnected) gives you indication that split system braking system performing properley!

The door rot - not disastrous- I found when I took my door cards off that the "Vital" PVC membrane was missing on both doors! -this deflects rainwater properley to drain points- is often missing and is the cause of a lot of rotten door bases!

My biggest problems were leaks! a right b*****d to sort!

but help from guys in forum put me right!

to date have changed all seals- the tonneau is common for back leaks- soft top front-doors-"B" POST drain tubes- check if clear..windscreen etc- moreover check all mastics on joint seams!! EVERWHERE!!! it has taken me all my time to sort!

foundi a right little sod of a problem...having just replaced my brake master cylinder found a rust hole near inner wing!-small- but was drainining down into sill area then floodin in!!- Other areas- bulkhead liners- check sealed properley!

Like me -sometimes you have got to go with your instinct!

Idid loads of Research prior to taking plunge! I planned on spendin 2k on puttin her right- including full internal regfurb! am lucky as am nowhere near yet- but you really get attached to a STAG!- best fun I have ever had!

A darlin bit of simple engineering! with lots of class! and a beut noise out of the twin pipes!

P.S get yourself a quality workshop manual! and be prepared to get the timing chains done EVERY 15K!- check all fluids weekly and tap the guys in the forum for advice! !!! THERE A GODSEND!!

DONT BUY THE FIRST ONE YOU SEE! their will always be a better one from a dedicated owner!!! 6.5k budget yields some very tidy specimens! 5k and less usually means work!!!

All above based on my experience! only The lads am sure will proffer learned comment!!!

              GOOD LUCK!

              CHEERS!

Hi covsprint- me again! the hood issue.....mine exactly the same(gape) you have to adjust the linkage bar to compensate(3 nuts and bolts) bit fiddly but do not panic can be put right relativley straitforward............P.S you need to follow the instructions implicitlley about raising same! if you do not has a tendency to throw hood out of alignment!

Thanks for all the advice chaps. After considering for a few days and another good look around, I bought the car, and it has been in daily use for the last week. First impressions are that it is a very well looked after car. I have been through the history folder, and the last owner, who had it for 24 years, had spent a lot of money on his pride and joy.

Ran out of petrol in it last Friday though, even though the guage read 1/4 full and the red warning lamp had only just started to flash. Lesson learned.

Thought the diff had failed last night too, but it turned to be just a pebble lodged in the brakes. What a racket! Doesnt look like it has damaged the brake materials thankfully.

Enjoying the soundtrack very much, and the wife and kids love it. Kids even baked me a 'welcome to Daddy's new car' cake!

Took the car to the Dolly Club annual bash at the weekend, and it was much admired. I let my wife drive the Stag and I took the Sprint. It is interesting to compare the two cars in terms of the driving experience. Stag is long legged and smooth, whereas the Sprint feels like a boisterous puppy that is just waiting for a fast run out. Both great in their own way.

Few things to look at in the near future to reassure myself, so may be asking some more silly questions. In the meantime, thanks for your help, and maybe see you out and about.

                    Hi Covsprint

I think I went to look at this car was it in Coventry just off the A46 near the ringroad painted in Saffron yellow if so I nearly bought it because it is a good genuine car with a few niggles that will keep you happy busy fettling for awhile which is why we buy them.

Just to let you know I bought the topaz one in my avatar instead which was in better condition just!

Technically it is known as keyboard bounce! But to much wine could also see this problem occurring

Is there such a thing as too much wine?

Is that the topaz one out Hinckley way? Or somewhere else? Would you be a local lad (to me in sunny Cov)?
