    replacing the soft top

hi all, can anyone tell me how hard it is to replace the soft top? i have a mohair top but the frame has gone. i now have a new frame and want to swap tops then fit the new frame back on to the car.

has anyone ever done this job? if so how hard is it to do, or shall i try and get it done by someone who knows what they are doing

Fit the frame to the car and adjust it so that it works wellfirst, then start by glueing the soft top to the back hoop and work forwards. When it looks and works okpop rivet the seal carriers on and fit the seals. It then may need minot adjustment to complete.

The hood flaps are trimmed to the seal carriers after fitting, so fitting a secondhand hood may be a bit nearthe bone.

Not hard if you think it through and take your time, but only you know your capabilities.

I have never done it but from talking to a well known Stag dealer I think even the experienced take their time and up to two days to do it. I confidently re-trimmed my seats but I would be very wary of doing the soft top as it needs to be well done to look and fit right!

A demonstration was held at National Day this year by a trimmer. It looked quite involved, and he started with a good frame. It took him about 4 hours. Unfortunately I didn't see the finished article as I was with the engine tuners as the show closed.

I've a word doc that a chap in Australia emailed me. Very detailed instructions. I'm sure he wouldn't mind me posting it on here for the benefit of other Stag owners.

Just take your time and choose a sunny day

Wow - fantastic description. Wish I'd had that when I fitted mine!

The main problen that I encountered was that the hood seemed tooshort to fit the frame. (It was BNIB but was aboutten years old) I had to fit it best I could but the end result is awrinkle free hood that is as tight as a drum! I still need a "special procedure" to put it up even after three years.

One thing that I would watch out for is the position of the hoop behind the B post, as this is pushed several mm further back when thecarriers and seals are in place.

            Best of luck.

Great - I would be very interested in how long it really does take and how difficult it is as mine is very tatty inside and I would like to do it without spending a fortune.

Bank on two days to strip, prepand paint the frame - then decide it would look better powder coated- then order some new frame bolts - thenget the whole jigsawback together and working again - All before you even start to fit the new hood

If you guess how long you would expect all this to take -then multiply by four.

Or you could trust the job to an old guythat lives locally who is probably past it and end up withtarted up crap
