has anyone took the sump off the engine whilst the engine is still in the car, and did you come across any problems? where do you start?

I've done it. Be sure you have a maintenance manual, and follow ALL the steps. The front cross member has to come off, and the steering rack has to be pushed out of the way (without disconnecting anything.)
While you are in there, as it may never happen again, consider replacing connecting rod bearing shells, oil pickup unit gasket etc.
You will have a lot of the front suspension off, so it is a good time to replace any of the bushings etc that you will have access to.
Good luck, and enjoy.

Hi Big Lad... why do you ask? If it just to change the gasket then check out this thread http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/vi...ht=sump+gasket. If not then follow David's instructions.... Nigel

Hi all,
had a go at taking the sump off the car yesterday, what a dirty job that is,bit of help and advice please.
took the eight bolts out , that holds the croosmember to the car and undid the bolts that fix it to the suspenson, what else needs to be disconected to remove the cross member, workshop manual I've got just says 'remove crossmember'? will have another go this week but any info whould be great before I start, I think yesterday I couldn't see the wood for the trees, or should that be bolts for muck.

Other than the brake line, I don't know what would interfere. Is it loose from the frame but just won't come out or is it still tight to the frame?

Rgds......Al
Had you took the suspenson off the cross member? as this thing will not move. I've got the sump all undone just can't get it off?Did you needanything to push it with or was it jist a matter of sliding it along? Also the only other thing I can recall I've not took off is the rack as I thought this would push forward with the cross member.

Theres the 8 bolts that hold the cross member to the body, the two bolts holding the lower suspension arms to the crossmember and you'll probalbly need to remove the four bolts holding the steering rack to the crossmember as well. If you can shove it forward as Al suggests you'll get the sump off as it only need a smiggen of clearence

Had another go yesterday , just undid the steering rack from the crossmember and everything just fell apart.Just ordered new gasket for the sump, it was leaking before as it had been plastered with gasket gue, also noted that it was missing a couple of bolts(the hard to get at ones behind the crossmember).I've also decided to get new big end and main bearring fitted as it all striped down. Thanks once again for all the help, and here's hoping it goes back together easy.

I know it's dragging up an old(ish) thread, but I'm having some "issues" getting the sump off and need some advice.
Thing is, I can't get the last crossmember bolt out - it's one of the ones behind the crossmember on the left side - and my car being LHD means the steering column is exactly where I want to have the spanner to stop the bolt spinning round. Try as I might, I can't get *anything* on the top of the bolt.. I think I must be missing something somewhere.. and I can't honestly bring myself to believe I've got to remove the steering rack just to get the sump off!

hi Tedlit,
I know what you are going through,it's a real git of a job getting that bolt undone. The way I did it was to get a socket with a adustable joint and long extenson bar on it and feed it down from the top, then got under the car and with two fingers worked it on to the bolt, then got back up and put a tee bar on the extenson, jamming it, or you could get someone to hold it ,so it couldn't turn, sounds easy but it isn't I know. Back under the car with another socket and undid the nut.I didn't take the bolt out for fear of not getting it back. You then have to remove the two bolts holding the lower suspension arms to the crossmember and the four bolts holding the steering rack to the crossmember. You should then be able to juggle the crossmember out. Good luck with what is a dirty old job , lets know how you go on.
regards
Tony
