    Service Wheel Bearings

I have had my car for 3 years now and have never checked the wheel bearings.

What sort of regular maintainance should I do on these?

Is this something I can do myself.

    Hi Steve

Check for excessive movement (play) with the car jacked up, and listen for unusual or excessive noise.

There is no routine maintenance possible, but you can adjust excessive free play once the driveshaft is removed from the car.....

      Are they easy to replace?

Simple answer is no - in your circumstances you would be better off getting exchange units. The problem is removing the drive flange from the taper....... it's not really a DIY job as the flange can become distorted if the wrong force is applied......

I do appreciate your position as far as getting spares is concerned over there, but unless you are really sure of what you are doing and have the right kit, you could ruin it easily.........

            Russ,

Am I right in saying that the front ones are much easier than the rear ones? From your post it looks like you are refferring to the rear ones only?

I wait in anticipation of being proved wrong....

              Hi Steve ,

You didn't say if it was front or rear you wanted to service.

Russ is talking about the rears ,if its your fronts your on about.you can take up play by tightening the castle nut(check Rom)to the front hub,you can also remove the hub and grease them.Changing them is straight forward as they are a pair of tapered bearings(and they're cheap).

              Cheers Steve

Absolutely right - I was making an assumption about the rears being referred to as those are the ones that give most people grief - as Steve says the front ones are a relatively easy change as long as you drift the outer races in square, and adjustment is a doddle.........

I was actually referring to both.

TBH, they prob dont need replacing but as they have not been checked I have had the car and probably not since the previous owner had the car i thought maybe some regular maintainance would be in order.

the reason I was targeting the rear ones in thepost is I have a diff whine and Iread somewhere that this can sometimes be mistaken for problems with worn bearings.

The whine I hear is coming form the back but since I have not heard a read Diff whine I was thinkingwhy not try the bearing if easy. They get a service andwho knows, it could also solve the backend whine.

                  A bit of proventative maintainance.
