    Re-torque or not??

Yesterdays run was the first time the car had got upto proper temperature on the rebuilt engine. Having been left overnight should I retorque the head bolts or wait till the first 500 miles are done?

If retorquing do I loosen the bolts first then torque back up or not?

    TIA......Al

Yes re-tourque now then again at 1000 miles, always back of a bolt or nut before re-torquing.

        Al,

You should retorque after it has cooled down from the first running of the engine. I would do it again after 500 miles, and probably finally after 1500 miles.

          Ok, thanks guys:?

          Bit of conflicting advice there

Perhaps I should do a poll and go with the majority

In the past the general concensus was always to retorque after the first run upto temperature (after an overnight cooldown) this is what i did with mine. Then retorque after some decent milage (500, 1000, 1500 take your pick. probably depends on how you use the car. Lots of short runs do it after 500 miles, a couple of long runs and do it around 1000 - 1500miles. I would have thought that the number of heating/cooling cycles had more effect than actual milage.

Yes, back them off a bit before retorquing. DON'T FORGET TO RETORQUE THE INLET MANIFOLD AT THE SAME TIME - redoing the head bolts may alter/affect the inlet manifold.

                Hi Guys,

Just gone past the first 500 miles so now looking to do a re-torque and change the oil etc.

One question though - when re-torquing do you back off all the bolts and then tighten them back up again, or do one at a time?

                Rgds.....Al.

One at a time please Al

Back off no more than a quarter turn and then torque back up.
