    Front grill and cooling

    Hi All,
I haven't got round to putting on the front grill yet, and in view of my cooling system being in an unknown quantity and the current high temps, was thinking of leaving it off for the Brands trip.

Does the front grill direct air to the radiator or will I be ok leaving it off?

The front grill is so open I don't think leaving it off will make any difference.

Stick the grille on Al - will make negligable difference to the cooling but will make the car look a whole lot better

        Ok, will do.
I was heading in that direction anyway, thinking that the grill may actually have a slight venturi effect on the air flow going through to the rad?

I would have thought most of the air will come from the openings in the front valance under the bumper anyway!

If you don't know this trick already - before you try and fix the grill to the car, put the screws in the grill and screw them into small pieces of margarine tub to hold them in place. It will make the job much easier .

I would re-fit it to save any stones being thrown upand damaging the radiator.

There was a post I read about the radiator affecting cooling more one way up than tother but that could have been at the start of April.

                    found it:

                    http://stagownersclub.mywowbb.com/forum1/5224-1.html

A while ago "Pommie Stag" asked which way up ther grill was supposed to be, there is a wider slat and a narrow slat on the top or bottom of the centre section of the grill. It turned out my grill was on upside down so I changed it. Last week I took my car for a long drive (350 ks) to Townsville and noticed that the needle was firmly over the "M". I thought (panicked)this unusual so after checking for coolant leaks and the coolant level, I realised the only thing I had changed was the position of the grill.

I turned it around, I got a few looks as I didn't move the badge! On the drive home the needle was back in it's normal position above the "E" I did post this, but I think there are a few who think I'm winding them up!

I'm not sure if it should make that much difference but I'm going to do a few runs with a temp probeattached to the coolant temp sensor on the engine tosee what readings I get with the grill off, on and inverted.

I'm presently wondering if my gauge is very sensitive between the "E" and "M"

I have a 78C thermostat, electric fan, no engine driven fan, an extra core in the radand louvred bonnet.

                    regards,

                    Raoul

Do we know which way the grill should be? Raoul does not say, or am I missing something?

                        Hi Mick

I think it was established that on each grill section, on the underside of each alloy strip, there is a grove and this goes a the bottom.

                        Cheers

This is only on the outer sections. That groove is not on the centre section. I think the row of holes on the top of the grill is a different width than the one on the bottom. Not sure which way around though. I would suggest, which ever way fits best!

I think the outer sections are different as well with a narrow section and wider top or bottom. When the outer ones are fitted with the groove on the underside of the alloy strips, then match the centre grill section to the width of the top or bottom of the outers. It fits either way round anyway as you say

I think it was Roger P that passed this information on

                            Cheers
