    Tonneau Cable Problem

    Hi Guys

Having been on hols I have not been able to use the Stag in the fantastic weather we are having so today I was eager to get the Stag out. Struggled to get the rear hood bolt to release easily by pulling the release leverbut with my right hand underneath it came free. Once the roof was dropped and the tonneau closed I can't now get it open.

I don't think the cable has broken as there seems to be a little tension in the release lever but even pulling it all the way up will not release the tonneau so I cannot put the roof back up. Not a major problem in this weather and the car is garaged.

How do I get it open to gain access to the release mechanism? Is there a way of accessing via the boot?

    Thanks

    Nigel

Theres no way of accessing it from the boot.

I can't look at mine to tell you for sure at the moment but I think you can get at the cable inner on the underside of the lever and maybe give it a help with a screwdriver or pliers.

There is a way of removing the rear seat back ,but someone else will have to enlighten you,as i haven't done it yet.

        Nigel,

I had a similar problem with mine. After studying the mechanism and watching closely as I closed the hoodI could see that the plunger/spring on the hood was misaligned. The catch/release/cable were all fine and doing what they were supposed to do. beforeI found this out my hood jammed. The misalignment was causing the outer edge of the plunger to"just" catch. All I didto release mine was "help" it up by carefully levering it open with a largeflat bladed screwdriver. It only took a little persuasion to make it release. Once opened I adjusted the punger and all was well. Worth a quick try with yours before you startremoving your seat etc.

        Good Luck

        Roger

OOPS:shock: Just reread your post and see its the cover not releasing - could still be a similar problem - try gently easing at both sides to see if it will release - once open check the alignment.

Sometimes they release but don't pop up because there is no tension (the hood usually pushes it up). Try pulling the tonneau up by hand while lifting the lever.

If that don't work, take out your cubby panels, and release the latches (one each side of the car) by hand. Then you can inspect to see why it isnt releasing.

If it comes to it you can remove the seat back by giving it a good pull from the bottom and then reaching up to undo the fixing bolts at the top. Then bend the tabs back to re-fit the seat when you have the tonneau cover open.

There was a post about this a long time ago (2 years or so?) Try a search for more info.

Thanks Kevin...of course now that the search facility is working again I should have done a search before posting:shock::shock::shock::shock:. Anyway found a post from last October which seems to have all of the answers.

Didn't realise that there are 2 cables which is why the lever still has some tension as I reckon one of the cables has broken or come away and the other is fine.

Another little job to add to the list!!!!!!!! Trouble with this sort of weather is that you just have to use it and so the jobs list gets bigger and none of the jobs get done. Much more fun using than fixing it though

Decided to investigate this problem now that good weather has faded and I will need to use the soft top.

The cable that releases the tonneau has broken right at the nipple in the release lever. Looking at various suppliers web sites the cables are sold in pairs only and come complete with the outer cables etc. The cost is around £30.00 which is a lot when only one inner cable is shot.

As the outer cable is in good condition I was thinking of using a cycle cable as these can be bought individually for a few quid. Hope to be able to get one the same thickness

Has anyone done anything similar and what experience have you had?

Cost me £2.99 from a cycle shop as I had to buy a rear brake cable for a tandem which was the only cable long enough. Worked a real treat though and much better than spending over £30 when there was nothing wrong with the outers..........

Same for accelerator cable. Just buy a universal brake cable and cut off the nipple you don't need, fit and trim to length.
