    Stag Interior distinctive smell

I wondered if anyone knows the answer to this. All stags that haven't been altered to leather smell exactly the same. Someone once told me it was a fish based glue that was used but most by now have had lots of interior retrimmed using modern contact adhesives so I doubt that's true.

The new car smell of modern machinery is caused by the platicisers in the vinyl but that fades whereas the stags smell just seems to remain the same. Mine is 34 years old this year and still smells exactly like the one my Dad had in 1975/6.

Does it disappear when the interior is completely retrimmed?

    Ian,

It has nothing to do with the upholstery. It is the enduringsmell of fearof overheating. Hopefully this is now fading as the remaining Stags are better maintained and understood.

      Hi Dave,

Now that would be real stag paranoia. Mine is only just emerging from a 7 or so year layup so unless I have been petrified of it overheating when locked up in a garage and fuelless, it can't be that (or do I have it worse than I thought).

I thought it was oil dripping on the exhaust

Not noticed any smells on the inside. My hood is normally down so all I can smell is whatever the local farmers are using that week.

The smell it gives to the garage is another matter though Old car, oils (various) soaking into strategically placed cardboard, mixing with a very slight hint of petrol vapor-----priceless

              Hi Ian

You are right - i had my first Stag in 1979 and the interior had that distinctive smell, now 30 years on i have another and the interior smell is the same - reminds me of many happy hours spent travelling up and down from Wales to London to see my then girlfriend, now wife.

Hi, it's either nostalgia, the hood, or the steering wheel cover, probably a bit ofeach Martin.

It is the usual older-car cocktail of oil leaks, fuel vapour and slightly damp carpets
