    Diff oil - EP90

I need to top up my diff, and I searched the forum to find that EP90 was recommended. Off I trotted to the local motor factor where, as usual, I appear as the bumbling idiot who hasn't got a clue when I'm asked -

"do you want EP90 or Hypoid 90?"

I've bought the EP90 (Comma) Gear oil with a "GL5" stamp on it. Can anyone tell me if this is correct before I fill the diff? or did I need the other one, which is apparantly hard to get.

Same stuff Tim - GL5 denotes a high pressure gear oil which is suitable for Hypoid Axles

Following on from Tim's question, can you use the same oil in a manual o/d box?

Officially if it has been completely drained then you need a Hypoid (EP) 75, GL5 spec, and for top-up use Hypoid EP90 GL5.

You might find that getting your paws on a 75 weight oil will be a struggle, so best compromise would be an EP80.

The lighter weight of oil will give you easier gearchanges when winter is about

            Hi Russ

            What about EP80W90?

I used this in my Diff as it was recomended by the local motor factor.

There was an article in the mag a while ago that suggested 20/50 engine oil in the gearbox, it apparently worked a treat. The diff oil should be Hypoy 90GL5 as previously stated

Being that the overdrive shares the gearbox oil I would be loath to change to engine oil. The epicyclic gear set in the overdrive and the pump to my mind need something a bit tougher than multigrade.

As to using a "multigrade" Hypoid oil, that make total sense as it will give easier cold changes until the box has warmed up properly.

In the past there have been changes in lube - the LT77 Rover box started out with Hypoid and ended with transmission fluid.......

I would leave our precious Stag boxes as intended with Hypoid.

I use 75w/90 GL5 semi synthetic in mine. Mine isa Morris oilbutyou can get it from Halfords. I found it makes the box smoother in comparison to the EP90.

Before that I did try 20w/50 for a while and it had a similar result but the box seemedslightly noisier.

                          Dear Tim

The letters "EP" stand for "Extreme Pressure"

Regarding EP90, for Diffs and Manual gearboxes > Although I am still currently using the Triumph Specified EP90, the last two little BMW's that we ran, needed EP80.

Putting a lighter oil in the manual gearbox has been the subject of a few articles in the Mag in recent times. Ifmy Stagwasnot keptin a "warm" garage, but sat outside in sub-zero temps, theneasier cold gearchanges would be a factor to concider and EP80 would help.

On a lighter note, if your transmission currently leaks oil, then, yes, if you put in a lighter oil,..............you get a bigger puddle to mop up!!

You need to bear in mind of course that Triumph / BLdid actually specifyGL5.
