    BRAKE SERVO ISSUE

    Hi Guys!....

Got a "strange" issue with my brakes.....I suspected spongy pedal and fading and bled the system as per orriginal manual instruction paying attention to P.D.W.A issue...but what follows next is a bit wierd! took her out on a run...brakes were better but on a couple of occasions I hit pedal hard and just gave way!! near **** myself!

but after another quick press pressure came back per spec!... this happened a couple of times and got her back on drive!......after calming quick brandy! had a nosey expecting to find fluid leak somewhere in system! but to avail!!!! not losing in drop anywhere! I suspect the servo but manual does not cover stripdown overhaul etc? all my flexible lines seem ok have used DOT4 to spec etc....any ideas appreciated......I noticed fluid was well warm in resevoir -all seals seem ok!

    All tips greatfully recieved!:dude:

    cheers

    Hi Phil,

If by saying 'gave way' you mean that the pedal went to the floor I would think this is a master cylinder issue rather than servo. Even with no servo (i.e engine not running) the pedal is firm, it just takes considerably more pressure to apply the brakes.

The fluid is probably sloshing about between the seals in the master cylinder rather than being lost i.e. at any time it is on the wrong side of the seals because they are (or one is) leaking. My guess would be the front one. Are you sure it is not going into the servo and dribbling onto your paintwork under the servo?

Try this link http://www.vsaab.com/html/Articles/brakemaster.htmfor instructions on overhauling the master cylinder. I thinks it's the same as those fitted to 1970's Saabs

        Hi Ray!

Cheers for that- fault appeared on test drive- obvious that servo in operation at that instance....but no losses noted. bled system on drive -static and no obvious leaks .. shoes -pads fine.going to to go over whole system top to toe again! no leaks evident i.e fluid to servo etc. if push comes to crunch gonna re build whole system from scratch- no flexibles bulging etc - wondering if poor braking overall down to glazing issues or bad pdwa or similar- will check on your ideas greatfully appreciated!

:dude:Cheers SSB! This is buggin me rotten! I have done loads of brake systems on loads of motors over years- but for love of god cannot get this STAG up to my exacting standard! is **** poor at the least . I know she is 30 odd years old but believe she not up to spec for a new ticket!

Thanks for the link re servo! will keep you posted!

          Cheers!:dude:

Had similar problem recently. It was the brake master cylinder seals letting fluid through. Getting theseals out is tricky as there are 3 circlips and one is buried inside the cylinder. Make sure you get the seals back the right way round as I nearly put one back wrong. Haynes manual pic isn't that clear.

                Hi All

                I've had this trouble !!!!!

not with a Stag but with a Talbot Sunbeam (rem my mate racing up Prescott in the Sunbeam Lotus ?)

Many years ago another Sunbeam he rebuilt the brake master cylinder, and all was fine around town stopped on a sixpence.

I borrowed the car and approached the end of the A66M at speed braked and OK then all of a sudden it gave way and pedal to floor. Quick pump and there wasbrakes again.

Turned out he had fitted the seals in the master cylinder the wrong way round, meaning the fluid on hard applications simply bypassed the seals and alowed the rod to move along the cylinder without moving the fluid ~ hence no brake.

Personnally I dont mess with seals in brake cylinders anymore, just buy a new one (never really found they are ever 100% after reseal).

As for warm fluid i think thats probably just engine heat ~ other place your fluid may be is in the servo. I doubt it as this sounds exactly like my mates problem 25 years ago.

                cheers

                Andy

                  Phil,

If you decide to dismantle the master cylinder and get into difficulties, nip down the road to me. I have a proper drawing (Sorry, hard copy only andI don't have a scanner) and also pliers to get at the awkward innards.

                    Got to agree Andy

I tried a seal kit formy stag mastercylinder ,but it just didn't work (And i've done plenty ofothers).maybe the inside bore wasn't up to it .so anyways got a new master cylinderand noprobs and peace of mind.
