With all the problems with repro and recon parts, I wondered if anyone could reccomend a supplierfor steering racks please? I need to replace mine sooner rather than later as the free play is now getting a bit much:shock:!
Hi Brian, I've had three faulty replacement racks in the last six years, so you're doing the right thing in looking for recommendations. Your best bet is E.J. Wards, they're very careful with their suppliers and stand by the stuff they sell - and no - I'm not on commission ? My faulty ones were from normally sound suppliers, not Wards, so no names.
Out of curiosity, have you located the origin of the free play ? Martin.
I got mine from T D Fitchetts in Telford at the beginning of the year, done 2000 miles and have no problems, but then i can honestly say I've had any problems with stuff from them, i use them for any bulky items asthey areonly down the road from me
Your a techinically astute chap, so give it a go yourself first. The kit is only 17 quid. I purchased my seals kit last weekbut not got around to tackling the rack yet though as up to my neck in it with the GT6:?.
My understanding is that the racks wear around the straight ahead position. The reconditioners tighten up the adjustment to reduce play but it also makes the rack tight where there was no wear. The result is that the steering does not self centre correctly. Not nice to drive.
many thanks for the advice, I'm so glad I asked. I don't have the time to rebuild my original rack, but Telford is not too far from me so it looks like a trip to Fitchetts is in order. There is so much free play in my current rack that it is making the car unpleasant to drive. Funny how it developed so quickly, strangely after I had greased the rack:shock:
