    Too smooth exhaust note

While out in the stag the other day a fellow enthusiast asked me what engine i had fitted, he thought it was a rover v8 due to how smooth the exhaust note sounded,

thequestion is myexhaust is stainless steel and has been on the car for 20 years could the silencers nowbe restricting the flow or the construction of the exhaust determine the sound, other stags i have seen have a more throaty sound even-though they have the same exhausts.

It`s a strange question i know but has mecurious.

I have exactly the same problem. I have a 74 Automatic with a stainless steel exhaust fitted.

A fried has a MKI also an automatic and it turns heads when he accelerates. Mine sounds good but really smooth too.

When I hear some of the YouTube offerings mine sounds really tame in comparision.

It will be very difficult to get an answer to this without hearing it. Have you thought about recording it and placing a vide on YouTube. I might have a go tomorrow with mine.

Maybe this is a Mimosa Yellow Characteristic :-)

I agree with what you say Steve

I will try and get a sound recording, i only really noticed it on the clackett lane to brands hatch run, everyone else's car sounded nice and throaty and mine sounds like a 4 cylinder.

WRONG, I've heard your exhaust while you drive away and believe me, there's nothing wrong with it ! it sounds like a proper Stag. (Stag paranoia ? )

Stainless exhaust systems are made of thinner steel and make more noise than a mild steel system - not less ! Martin.

Cheers Martin stag paranoia i think

I was wandering if the size of tail pipes makes any difference(i know this has been mentioned before)

Yeah, the larger Mk1 tailpipes are louder - not too expensive either. Martin.

Also it does not matter if you fit small or big bore ends, it will sound the same. Big bore is only there to enhance the look, as the saying goes when it comes to men and cars " its an extention of your p***s" ....There was a thread regarding the sound of the exhaust and large, small bores...

Mine also seems quieter than many others, never bothered me, always enjoyed the slightly more subtle sound

Sorry to disagree Sukh, but the MK1 tailpipes do make a different sound to the smaller MK2 ones, they're louder, and a bit more raucus. Martin.

I replaced the mild steel system with SS last year. Until it sooted up the SS made an awful tinny sound. It is better now but much boomier. I much preferred the mellow sound of the mild steel.

I'd agree that stainless steel exhausts do seem louder and tinnier than mild steel when new but does anyone have any opinion if tubular exhaust manifolds make a difference to the sound? I also wonder if any head porting work will affect the sound. Thoughts?

Out of curiosity, what's the difference in size between Mk1/Mk2 tail pipes? I suspect i inherited Mk1 pipes on my Mk2,they seem quite large, around 75mm ish,or are the tailpipes the same size just the bore different?
                        Cheers

                          Hi Steve

I have small bore tail pipes and they are 50 mm in diameter. i think the size of the tail pipes is down to the manufacturers.
