    wiring to ignition switch

    Hi

Having seen a nos switch on ebay on buy it now I foolishly removed my ignition masterswitch and opened it to cleanthe terminals thinking I can always buy a new one if cleaning it doesn't work. I wasn't prepared andbits flew around the cabin. Bother or worse. I recovered the flying bits and have reassembled it and would really appreciate it if someone can find time to check the continuity between terminals on a working one.

At present the battery is disconnected. With no key in the lock terminals 2,3 and 6 are in contact.Turn 1 gives 2,3,5 &6 in contact. Turn2 gives 7 in addition and finally the last position connects terminal 1 with the white and red wire to the starter solenoid. Can someone confirm that I am not about to fry the harness if I re-connect the battery? The one I had seenon ebay has disappeared otherwise I would have bought it.

On a slightly different tack can anyone provide a legend showing what letter signifies what colour on the wiring diagram on the handbook? Does n mean brown?

Thanking you in advance. It is galling to have a beautiful car in the garage that I daren't try to start.

Not too sure about your connections; my '76 only has four connectors on the back and is white in colour. I've an earlier one that's black and has 7 connectors with only 6 actually wired in. I think is a bitfubar as I have to jiggle it to get any connections but what Ido get is :

      Off nothing

      Position 1, 2 brown to 5 white/pink e.g. the radio

Position 2 as aboveplus 2 to 3 and 6 to 7 so ignition circuits live+ something on the lighting side?

Position 3 I get naff all but I expect the switch is duff

From the ROM the switch colour/connections are

      1 White/Red to starter motor

      2 Brown power in

3 White drives all the stuff when the ignition is on

      4 no connection

      5 White/Pink - Radio

      6 Red - Lighting

7 Red/Green also lighting but pos ignition controlled??

I can't see why when yours is off you've got power from 2 to 3 as 3is all the ignition supplied stuff like the fuel pump and wipers etc. Similarly in position 1 I'd expect just 2 and 5 to be connected (radio)

A great big thanks to SGN and Nick A. The colour legend makes things a lot clearer and the info on connections is really helpful. All I have to do now is to either source another switch or figure out how to fix the one I have.

If yours is the older style black switch you're welcome to my spare one if you want another to fiddle with. I’m not sure it’s working 100% though

or there's one on fleaBay; but it's the later sort

To quote the imortal Victor Meldrue " I cannot believe it"

Assembling and dis-assembling the switch several times and comparing it to another on the bench that is broken, gave the same result every time. The one on the bench was in line with the advice I received butwhen fitted to the car I still had the weird extra connectivity. Eventually I tested the wires in the car without the switch in place and lo! it showed connections between the white and brown wires. When I disconnected the terminal block under the dash the wires were exactly as Nick A and Steve said. In other words the interconnection between terminals 2 and 3 were elsewhere. I put everything back together and the car started. OK the starter solenoid would not come in on the key and I am still having to hot wire it on a supplementary wire, but this what I was trying to correct. At least I haven't made things worse. Being the custodian of a stag is not boring. By the way Nick, thanks for the offer but I shall probably revert to plan A This was to buy a switch and mounting plate and fit it under the dash.

I am now going to sit down witha large sherry and chill out. Thanks to all who took interest in the procedings. I shall put everything back together tomorrow. After all it is another day and it isn't buggered up yet.
