    Steering column bush

    Hi All

I have followed the detailed instructions that described and sent by Stuart, Julian and David, thank you. Although it sounded daunting, you were all right, it was so easy to removed the steering column and do the job. Thanks

I have done the lower bearing and bought the followingkit

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-STAG-L...lenotsupported

I didn't use the tension washer as it was too tight. Anyone else fitted one of their kits, and did you use it? There just didn't seem enough room.

The steering column isn't back in the car as the lower column bush 153040, one of them just disintegrated.

How do I fit these and are they easy to do? I presume I am going to have to take out the lower bearing screw again and then what, does it all pull out?

There has never been any play in the steering wheel up or down, so presume its not worth replacing the top steering columnclamp ring?

Any feedback would be appreciated as I will be ordering the parts tomorrow

    Thanks

Have taken column apart and the inner tube bushes 153040 had all broken up and the pieces just fell out. 2 new ones on order and I am ready to fit.

The lower shaft is not that bad, but joints are floppy so will refit to car and do during winter. Paddocks are out of stock, so easy decision. Other suppliers have them by looking at £75 roughly and the car doesn't need one really. If I can find a good second hand one, I may fit that instead

I can see now why it is so much easier to take the entire steering column assembly off the carto work on.

Hope to have back on road for weekend

I used a s/hand one from Martin at JustTriumph - 10 quid was much better value than a recon one

That is another hot topic of conversation - you know how to pick them

Just come in from the garage after fitting all new bushes to the column and hope to fit steering back into car in the morning. I am looking forward to lining it all up when going back together but have a volunteer to help. She can always do the ironing later.

What job fitting the 2 column bushes, the ones that are the flexible rubber, nylon that go inside the column that the inner runs on. Must have had about 10 attempts as they kept moving despite being in the locating holes. Using oil grease helped but they are badly made and do not sit flat in the tube and that was in addition to having to cut small bits off them with a model knife.

Couldn't get the tensioning washer on the end of the lower bearing, just wouldn't fit but cant see that will make much difference. There is very slight sideways movement in the lower bearing where the countersink screw fit. Was tempted to squeeze the tubing but not sure if its movement on the shaft. Very minimal and nothing like it used to be.

Hoping this is it now and test run tomorrow subject to whether. I would think that a 30 mile run with the top down would be long enough to test it all.
