I have been talking to a local engineering shop about Stag cylinder heads. He told me that the saviour of the 'K'series engine/cylinder heads fitted to the MGF etc which suffer similar problems to the Stag has been a saver shim and a new gasket called the MLS gasket. MLS stands for Multi Layered Steel which replaces the copper/fibre sandwich type. He has bought a new planer that leaves the headsurface like a mirror without the machine marks, because otherwise he said they would leak. The shim is fixed with silicone type cement (Wellseal).
I made some enquiries for the Stag as this could save many otherwise scrap heads and the shim is available at £26 ( .5mm stainless steel) but the tooling cost for the gasket is about £2400 and was thought not a viable proposition with low quantities. But that was only one gasket manufacturer, others might think different.
Apparently most head sets for the 'K' series now come with a saver shim and the MLS gaskets.
