What makes a Good Moderator?

Graham,
I have been asked by a Committee Member on the Complex that I live on if I would consider being a Moderator for our Community Website (CastleHarbourCommunity.com).
The existing 2 Moderators (who are both Committee Members) are resigning their posts soon and need someone else to take over, who is a permanent Resident, not a Committee Member, and is PC literate.

You have been doing the job on the Stag Forum (remarkably well in my opinion) for some time now, and I would welcome your advice & comments on what is involved and how time consuming it is. Castle Harbour Forum is not well used at present and people seem afraid to make posts. Maybe it is because the existing Moderators are both Committee Members and the Committee is not the flavour of the month at present.

If I agreed to do the job I would want to make some changes to get people to make posts & generate interesting discussions, and produce a monthly bulletin in a similar format to the one you do. Our Website is new & needs to be kick-started so that it can be of benefit to the whole Community.

The majority of owners on-site are British and a considerable number of them have signed-on as members but have yet to make a first post. I would want to rectify this and make the Forum a popular - frequently used Website.

All we have in our existing Photo Gallery are some boring pictures of Castle Harbour & the surrounding area. I think a few interesting You Tube Clips wouldn't go amiss and maybe even a few Stag clips, plus of course some good jokes & anecdotes.

Graham - I would welcome your comments and opinions on the subject of being a good Moderator. I would also welcome (suitable) comments & advice from any other Stag Forum member who may have opinions on the subject.

PS. Apologies for the spelling mistake in the Topic Heading - perhaps you can correct it Graham as I can't.

Hi Terry,

I dont see my self as a moderator. Indeed, I only agreed to write a few words for the magazine and ended up being called a super moderator.

Apart from the last two months, I have always asked people what they want in the magazine article and apart from a couple of humorous changes to Ian's posts, everything else has been on request.

Cant comment on your forum but in my experience, a bunch of reasonable people with a common purpose will sort themselves out providing they dont have something fundamental stopping them.

Having the ability to edit titles?

Seriously leaving the boards alone for 99% of the time but stepping in on the 1% when it gets OTT

I'd first ask the question why they resigned.

One Moderator was the Vice-Chairman of our Committee until a few weeks ago but says he has had enough, and want's to sever all existing links and relax more and enjoy the Tenerife lifestyle without all the hassle of being on the Committee. He is an occassional PC user, but no specialist and says I would be more suited to the job.

The other Moderator is also going to resign from the Committee next year and says he only agreed to be a Moderator until the Website got established. This person lives in the U.K. for most of the year and is not yet a permanent resident on site. He too has sent me an email asking if I would be a Moderator.

I think most of the owners in Castle Harbour would prefer it if a non-Committee member (past or present) was a Moderator as they feel it is a bit like "Big Brother" at present with the Committee reading everything that is said on the Forum and in one case the Moderators "banned" one owner/member for 2 months from the Forum. This person though had gone over the top and was using the Forum to make threats against both Committee members and other owners.

I think if the Committee were not involved in the actual running of the Forum, more people would use it on a regular basis and raise issues more freely. My opinion anyway.

Sounds like something fundamental to me Terry....

Graham - I have made a post on the Forum in question asking what members think about a change in Moderators and my ideas for the Forum if elected to the post.
Will wait and see what sort of response I get. I have been called all sorts of things in the past - but never a Moderator! I am normally quite a passive person, but if I find out who pinched my Stag grill badge last might I might strangle him or drown him in our Pool!
PS. Graham you still haven't corrected my spelling mistake in the Post Heading?
