Hi has anyone got experience of separating the auto box from the stag before lifting the engine out . Due to lack of space/ height in my garage, I think it might be easier and also mean a lower lift for the engine only. Are there any problems with re-uniting the gearbox afterwards??

Hi Marvstag, you can remove the auto box before removing engine but please remove the torque convertor as well be warned it will be half full of oil as well. It is possible to fit the gearbox back to the engine when installed in car but difficult because of lack of room you need to bolt bellhousing to gearbox with torque convertor attached to gearbox before installing. Just trying to install gearbox on its own will lead to trouble unless the gearbox oil pump lines up with the torque converter 100% accuratley. You need to remove starter to access torque convertor fixings.

Welcome to the list.
It's easier to remove box and engine together.......................forget what the manual says about lifting the front of the car up, do the opposite lift the back, if you put the back onto some car ramps it will drop the front down and the engine and box will come out almost horizontal...............If you want me to talk you through it send me a pm with your landline number.

No need for me to comment as ARBMAN has already answered.Just follow his link. The only thing I will comment on is, without being stupid the higher you can get the back up the easier it is, if you have got car ramps they are about right, just gets the back up a bit higher than were Arbman has his, and im sure Arbman, and anybody else who has done it that way, will agree it is far easier!!!! Over the last 20 years our engine has been out about 3 times the first time I did it as per the book, and what a struggle, then somebody gave me that tip, so much easier.

Another tip, when lifting out the engine and box assembly, dissconnect the exhausts at the downpipes and sling the lifting chains around the manifolds to lift with.It will come out at the perfect angle.
