    Auto BW65 to SD1 5 Speed

    Hi guys,

I have checked the search forums and no joy there, so thought I would start a post.
My BW65 is on its last legs, its drives fine locally but prolonged motorway drives tend to cause it to spill oil all over the exhaust, I had to be recovered after 90 miles the other day
There is also a nasty vibration at 70+ and a lesser one at 50mph. I have been advised that the proshaft is fine and the gearox is the issue...
I have also been quoted £1000+ for a rebuild.

I would rather spend less money and change to an SD1 5 speed box to mate with my lovely Rover V8 :P

    Anyone done this ?
Can it be done with the engine in place?
my list of things I need are:

    Gearbox
    Bellhousing
    Flywheel ?
    full clutch
    Slave clutch
    pedal box
    modified gear lever
    propshaft

I would like to try it myself having done a few gearbox changes on Vitesses and Spitfires.. Can it be done from underneath in my small garage or is it worth a few hnudred quid to get the ocal garage to do the swap for me ?

    Thanks for you help....

    Stu

There is another option which seems easier that is to fit the ZF (Range Rover) overdrive gearbox which should bolt straight up to your engine. You will not need to change the pedal box and add clutch hydraulics either.

PS do you get along to the Surrey meetings in Cobham (there is one next Tuesday)?

Will that not create problems with the transfer box for the Range Rover 4X4 set-up?

A ZF box from a Jag and the RR bellhousing should work (check out the Monarch site) you will still have all the issues of speedo drive etc.

I did go for a while to the monthly meetings when I was a member, my enthusiasm wains as the meetings get closer... too lazy I reckon :?

I still like the idea of the 5 speed box, I only went for an auto due to a bad left foot which seems fine these days !

This may interest anyone wishing to change their Triumph MOD gearbox to a Ford or Toyota 5-speed:

            Hi Stu,

i changed from a Be35 last summer quite easy to do yourself

The engine can stay in as long as you unbolt the torque convertor

and remove at the same time.

Your list should also include clutch master cylinder and

clutch hydraullic pipe (You can buy ready made from monachs)

If you have trouble getting hold of a gear lever try

robsports for a tr7 item which is about 1 inch shorter.

You should also look on v8forum.co.uk as the gear box regularly

comes up for sale.Try to make sure you have the gearbox crossmember

as well as it is easy to weld it to your existing b/w cross member.

As a bonus my mpg went up from 16 to 25.

if you need any more advise do not hesitate to pm me

            good luck Martin

I had a similar problem = Stag + Rover + BW65. I wanted a manual sports car and after much researching on the topic I decided to install a Toyota 5 speed manual gearbox - it is a lot of work, but well worth the effort. I now have the sports car that I always wanted - it has transformed the car

I have written an article on how I did teh conversio nwhich has been published here by teh Canberra TRiumph Club - I submitted to the UK Stag Club but they have not published yet.

              I have attached a copy.

It would be interesting if there was a kit to fit a modern 5 or 6 speed manual gearbox to the Triumph V8.
Mines an auto BW35 and I am considering the ZF 4 speed auto conversion. However I might be interested in a modern manual box if available.
I have driven a manual Stag with overdrive and to be honest was not impressed with the agricultural nature of this box, long throw and heavy clutch, compared to a modern gearbox.

some very intersting posts, cheers guys, got a few issues:

                  1) No money, but will be working on it...
                  2) My BW 65 seems to be a BW35, I was told it was a 65 by my garage, but when I took the prop off it was slined and slid into the gearbox back end (technicaL term)
                  which must mean its a 35 >?
                  3) I actually think I will be happier with an auto, which really throws a spanner in the works..
                  4) Ideally want the ZF box but that would be at least 2yrs away possibly 4 !

J Paddock does recon boxes and torque converter for under £500, anyone used him ?
Is it worth spending money on a recon BW35 ?

                    I have purchased a 1985 Rover Vitesse 5 speed manual EFI !
So it looks like I am going manual... the power difference between the SU'd Auto and EFI'd 5 speed is huge.
Can't wait to start tinkering... give me 6 months and I could be up and running
I will need to spend some money at Monarchs I reckon, any idea where to get the pedal box from or can I use the Rover one ?
Not made any measurements yet but I am sure one of you may have travelled down this road

It took 3 weeks from start to finish, but I am happy to say I am driving a manual car (just got to get used to it now)

Learnt a lot about my Stag, I now know it very well.....quite an experiance that had me close to tears at times, mainly due to acess around the exhaust.

Glad I did it though, kind of bored now that it's finished...

                        Hi Neil

Would either of the companies that you mention in your write up make the toyota conversion for a stag engine

                        Thanks
