Steering Play

Hi all,

How much steering play is normal is normal/ideal?

I have approx 0.5 in at steering wheel rim.

The play is in the rack, all the links to itare sound.

Is there anyway to adjust this play out?

Hi Mark, a half inch at the rim doesn't sound too bad, does she still self centre ? You can try and adjust out some of the play at the lock-nut / adjuster under the pinion, but the amount of adjustment required is very tiny and easily overdone. Personally after trying it on a previous rack I wouldn't bother. Jack the frontup, accurately mark the positions of thelock-nut and adjuster,undo the lock-nut (VERY tight) and tighten the adjuster about a 32nd of a turn, now turn the wheel from lock to lock slowly, feeling for tight spots, tighten and slacken a few times as necessary. If this doesn't improve things, at least you know where you started from and you won't make things worse.

While you're at it, swap the small centre bolt for a grease nipple and give it five shots of LHM grease. Martin.

There is a pin inside the rack which locks two shafts together. If this pin is not completely tight this will give some play as I have experienced on a previous car. It was quite difficult to fix this problem but I did cure it eventually.
