    Steering Lock

Hi to all fellow members, can anybody help?

Is it possible to swap over the Steering Lock Key Barrel?

I bought a full set of barrels, no problem with the doors and petrol cap. I have tried to take apart the mechanism on the steering lock, but cannot see how on earth you can remove the barrel!

My Stag is nearing completion and I want one Key to work the Steering Lock, Petrol Cap and Steering Lock

    HELP!

    Hi

Welcome to the forum. There are two dome headed setscrews that hold the two halves of the casing together. For reasons that I don't understand these do not have any means of tightening or loosening. Perhaps a punch and then a drift to undo them? Otherwise you could drill a couple of 1.5mm holes to insert pair ofcirclip pliers in and twist to unscrew. Good luck and hopefully some more knowlegeable member can advise further or a better method. As I describe all seems a bit drastic.

These domed headed screws are 'Shear bolts' they originally had hex heads but when they are installed you continue to tighten until the head shears off. They are a security feature. I drillled a hole in each one and used an 'eze-out'.When I had removed them I replaced them with plain bolts.

However once you have the steering lock in your hand you still need to change the barrel. I did the job but cannot remember in detail, I think there are 2 small screws holding the switch assy on which is easily removed. The barrel was held in by a very small brass pin which I had to very carefully drill out without making the hole any larger. If you are not careful the assembly then explodes in your hand. The common problem is wear on a mazak cast bit that moves the lock bolt across this prevents the lock locking or worse unlocking.

I remember it as a very fiddly job best done sitting at the kitchen table not upside down in the drivers footwell.

Paul, thanks for that, I will now explain more!

I have got through two locks, one ofwhich was attempted by a masterlocksmith, who undid the flaps on the rear back plateof the lock. Managed to get the newlock in, but had no way of then securing the back plate. In over 15 years of being a master locksmith, he said he had been beaten!

I remember a while ago, over a year or so, there was mention in one of the SOCmagazines, that somebody was going to show us how this could be done. The personwas on the SOC committee, and was one of the organisers of the annual get together. The venue had lakes and camping and there was also an air display laid on, from a close RAF base, but I cannot remember the venue? The person was tall and had a greyish beard,he was in a flap organising, so I only got as far asto shake his hand!

Can anybody rememberwhich month this article appeared in, or know the person in question. As I have now destroyed two good usedlocks, together with a brand new old stock lock,I hope I am not left with having to have two big lock keys on the keyring........

        Best regards,

        Eddy

          Hi all,

the shear bolts are there to prevent low lifes nicking the car,

because it would take no time at all to remove the ignition barrel

          if normal bolts were installed,

hope that clears up the shear bolt question

          cheers Martin.

Sorry no idea about the venue but the description fits Clive Tate, of Tate and Lewis fame and club treasurer. I think the beard has now gone.

Thank you Peter and Nick for your replies

I can now ssleep knowing who the person was and the location of the venue1

I can now approach changing the steering lock barrel, without trying to crack that egg with a sledge hammer.

Thank you both for your invaluable replies, perfect and just goes to proove that the forum does work, only wish I'd used it before!

              Best regards,

Yes it is but it's a bit fiddly. There's a small pin in the steering lock that holds the lock barrel in postion. You need to get this out first. I drilled mine out an made a right mess of the lock. Ended up taping and screwing to hold the new lock barrel in place.

                    Hi Nick,

I tried to reply to your message on the forum but cannot see how to!

The information is just what I needed. I was approaching it, like using a sledgehammer to crack an egg.

I will now take the lock to a local machine shop to get them to drill it out and tap it to take a small srew/bolt

If you can post this on the forum, then please do so. On the other messages received it gave me an option to reply, on your message no option was given!

                    Again, many thanks,

                    Eddy
