    Won't Start!

    Hi All

    Put the carbs etc back on tonight and refitted the Distributor as per the ROM & DJT's advice.

    I have petrol in the filter, I have spark but it will not start

    When turning over I get a puff of smoke from the base of the carbs which I persume is a small backfire?

    Why?

      Hi Des

      No I did not take the lead off the dizzy cap and they are numbered!

      I put No2 to TDC (on 0 degrees) and mounted the dizzt with the rotor arm finishing in the postion pointing towards the far side coil bolt which lines up with No2 on the cap.

      Could I be 360 degrees out as I did not have the cam cover off?

        With #2 on TDC is the crank pulley also on TDC? Are you sure that #2 is at TDC on the compression stroke? Could be you are 180 degrees out (360 would have you back where you started!).

          Hi Dave

          White line on pulley was on 0 degree and I could feel the piston with a screwdriver.

          As the wether it was on the compression or exhaust stroke I don't know.

          Yes 180 not 360 Doh!

              Hi Stu,

              If you take the plug out and out your finger/thumb on the hole, when turnng the crank you will feel the pressure increasing on the compression stroke.

                Take the oil filler cap off and turn the engine by hand until you see the cam timing park line up with the cam cap, then you know you are on the firing stroke. The piston on No 2 may be pressurising, but on the exhaust and as mentioned, you could be 180 degrees out

                      Sounds like you have the distributor 180 degrees out as others have said. When I put mine back together after having the heads off I did this. Got lots of popping and puffs of smoke as you say:shock:!! Turned the dizzy 180degrees and she fired up straight away!
