    overdrive stuck on

took swmbo out for i nice meal this evening 16 mile run out to the pub and about a mile to go switched out of o/d and got a funny vibe go thru the car, flicked the o/d switch a few times and nothing seemed to happen neither in or out. vibration felt all of the half mile left to pub and felt like clutch slip.

anyway had grub two hours later it drove home ok but i did not use o/d until i could see my house (just in case it popped) and it changed in and out fine.

any ideas what could cause this to seemingly stick in and give the vibration.i will check the g/b oil in the morning.what is a good oil for these box,s.

    cheers steve..........

    Hi Steve

go for the oil level first - top up with an EP90 to GL5 spec - if you decide to do a oil change, use EP80 GL5.

This article I found a while ago might give you some insight into your overdrive and how it works......

    Fingers crossed for you

thanks russ, i think i will change the oil it has not been done in my ownership. that is a very interesting article and does enlighten.may i ask why you recomend the 80 spec gl5 for oil change ,will it enhance the mechanical operation or is it superior in other ways.

      thanks steve..............

        Hi Steve

Officially, you should do a complete gearbox fill with EP75, but nowadays it's harder to find than rocking horse poo hence the EP80 which is a little easier to come by.............

Top-up is with EP90 as it is assumed that the gearbox has munched some of the "goodness" out of the original oil.

GL5 is the minimum industry standard spec for hypoid extreme pressure gear oil - you can find lesser spec oils that won't do the job but the GL5 mark guarantees the performance/additives you require for gearbox and overdrive.... that's all........

            Steve,

You might want to look at the orings in the overdrive solenoid shuttle valve, I have had the same symptomsin the past.

You will need to make up a special 1" spanner to remove the solenoid with the gearbox in the car as access is "restricted" by the gearbox tunnel, see attached photo. The spanner jaws will need to be reduced in thicknessalso.

I used a shaved wine bottle cork to plug thehole when I removed the solenoid, it preventedalot of oil from pouring out.

The most pleasurable part of the job was drinking the bottle of wine to obtain the cork!

            regards,

            Raoul

              Hi Steve

I had a load of similar trouble with my A type overdrive.

When I use to slow down for a junction it would cut out of overdrive and pulling away it would slip, all this happened when the car warmed up, it was perfect for the first 20 minutes of driving.

Check with the ignition turned on without the car running put the car in third gear and flick the o/d switch, you should hear a definite click as the solonoid does its job, repeat that in fourth gear.Starting at your gear lever check all your wiring for charfing and make sure you haveclean connections as far as you can see.Get under the car and check the wire to the solenoid and theres a joiner under there somewhere make sure this is clean, its prone to getting crap in it due to its positioning.Theres a filter on the bottom of the overdrive clean this out before you put your new oil in.

Hopefully one of these things should sort it as they dont go wrong internally very often.

well changed the oil with a new spanner i bought on fleabay ages ago its a st/steel laser cut one looks lovelyf.....g useless dont buy:shock:had to weld a m10 nut onto old square bsp plug to get it out:Xworked well. so took it out for a run and no overdrive tried ignition on and 3rd and top flicking o/d switch cant hear any thing checked fuse ok so i guess its back under and check all wiring to solenoid.

btw it took 3/4 litre to fill box could this low level have screwed the o/d.gonna have another go at it now.

                  Steve ,

Check the inline wiring plug/socket under or by the starter solenoid ,that's where my fault was ,totally corroded.

                  Cheers Steve

                    Hi Steve,

Some time ago one of our Stag Technical Advisors recommended the use of engine oil for the g/box and o/d. Think that the performance of modern oils permit the use of this oil in the'box. Apart from being cheap and easy to obtain the gear selection is easier particularly when cold. I've used engine oil in my 'box ever sinceand done thousands of miles - most of them continental - and the 'box still operates perfectly.

Just a tip on filling the 'box. Buy the 500cc Oil Suction Pump from Machine Mart. It's designed for filling gearboxs and engines etc. Its brilliant. OK for the diff. aswell.

The filler/level plug can be very tight and knuckle grazing if aninadequate open ender is used. I bought a 7/16" Snap On socket called a "double square" (part no. F314). This will ensure the tightest plug will undo without damage to you or the plug. I'm sure cheaper double square sockets are available elswhere but time wasof the essence in my case andI had to go the Snap On route.

Coincedentally, my o/d box is out at the moment with a huge oil leak between the o/d and 'box plus a slipping clutch. I will almost certainly back on the forum for advice on the dismantling and reassembly of the 2 halves. Its got to be back on the road for National Day!

robert like the sound of the pump, may well go for it.checked all my wiring seems ok gut feeling that the o/d solenoid is u/s its got to wait just not enough hrs in the day.

i had heard a rumour about this oil type change before good to hear you have been successfull with it .

i am trying to source a bsp plug that takes an allen key for the replacement.

                      cheers steve.

what symptoms did you get and where and how much for o/d solenoid.took it out last night and although the o/d is not working im still getting a strange vibe thru the car at 40 -50 worrying hope it wont stuff it completely.

Could it be the viscous coupling or a wheel out of balance?
