    another expansion bottle

I'm just at the point of completing the reassembly ofmy repaired expansion bottle (new topic to follow), but I'm missing one little bit of info, the orientation of the cap vent port relative to the inlet port at the bottom. Mines a 76's model. Can anyone just pop out and check theirs?

    Hoping for a quick response

          Too late!

I read a thread the other day regarding someone else's expansion bottle, which prompted me to check mine out. The brass filler section to which the cap fits was held on to my bottle by a jubilee clip! Not standard equipment I concluded. On its removal the top half detached itself from the bottom and the bottle, leaving just the swaged section attached. Eons ago it appears that the solder joint between the to had decided to part company for some reason. Gently prising off the the swaged section, tonight I rectified the problem with a little bit of plumbing know how. See photos.

Top left: clean up separated parts, you can make out the old solder on the inverted fillerpiece. Askew is the openedswaged section

Top right: reassembled. Left middle: re soldered. Right middle: re cleaned with new 'o'ring. Bottom left: re-swaged with ports in line! Bottom right finished article ready to be fitted to car. Ta-da!

One thing I noted while cleaning up the bottle is that the bottom port has a steel tube liner, the bore ofmine was encrusted with 'lime scale' for want of a better description, whilst not blocked it was not far off, rendering the expansion facility inefficient. Worth a check on yours I'd suggest.

With regards to the bottle on ebay, is the vent pipe missing?

Were they were ever fitted with a vent pipe?

If the top is spinning around then that is not good. This would imply that it is not air tight and therefore unable to build pressure in the system.

It is my understanding that increasing pressure has the effect of increasing the boiling point of the coolant. If there is no pressure in the system then the coolant will boil at a much lower temperature with the inevitable problems that follow, loss of fluid through evaporation and subsequent overheating.

Well... that is very interesting because my coolant does seem to 'dissapear' and I keep filling it up.

There is at least some pressure as the top hose gets hard to press in - however think I need need to sort this bottle.

                    cheers
