Hi, anyone have any ideas why my rev counter bounces all over the place from left to right when driving, its kinda steady on tick over but theres still a small bounce.
It would be useful if you could lets us know what your car is - Stag obviously, but year, Mk 1 or 2, auto/manual, has it got the original Triumph V8?
If yours is an early MK1 you have probably got the early type rev counter. these can be prone to the symptoms you describe - look at the front face of it and see if it is marked RVI. If you have electronic ignition fitted this may not help the situation. my one has the occaisional "fit" when it gets above 4500 rpm.

Hi, thanks for the reply, yes that info would help , having just realised my childhood dream of owning one im a bit of a newbie and have an overwhelming feeling that i have bitten off more than i can chew...lol.
Still, you have to start some where eh.
Its a 1972 mark 1 auto with the original V8 engine. having looked at the counter it is indeed marked at the very bottom with RVI 2819/00. I think it also has electronic ignition.
ignore the bit at the start about low gearing. About half way down it gets to the nitty gritty of the two types of rev counter fitted and the whys and wherefores of correct operation with electronic ignition.
On a lighter note:
I would advise against reading too many of the forum posts at this early stage - you will almost certainly develop a mental condition widely known asStag Paranoia:shock:.This starts out as a nervous twitch at every tiny little noise heard whilst out driving the car and eventually develops to the stage whereyou are frightened to even look at the car in case something goes wrong.:?
Seriously though the Stag can be a rewarding car putting a big grin on your face everytime you go out in it - nothing else comes close in my book - just bear that in mind if you do have any problems. Yes the Stag does seem to have more than its share of problems, but bear in mind the 40 year old design and early 70's british Leyland build quality and penny pinching and it all makes sense.The good news is spares, expertise, help and adviceare readily available- the former at the many Stag specialists who offer nextday delivery ofparts and the latter here on this forum.I can guarantee that you won't come across a problem that someone on this forum hasn't had themselves - and fixed - at some point.
Has you car had much use in recent years? In my experience a lot of faults occur due to lack of use, long lay ups and low mileage.
