    loud tappet noise

    Hello

    Any advice on this would be appreciated.

    The cars just been into my local garage (they're very familiar with the engine etc)

    General tune up plus a repacement oil pressure switch that has been leaking.

    Took it out for a spin about an hour ago and it felt brilliant. Took it up to 75 on the carriageway but on slowing at the roundabout a loud very loud tappet type sound starting coming from the right hand rocker cover area. So, nursed it home..oil pressure was good, no overheating and still lots of power. It's going back tomorrow but if anyone can suggest why this would happen so suddenly it might give us a head start. I've heard noisy tappets before but never this loud and never coming on so quickly.

        Something metal has got into the combustion chamber, happened to me, thought I had dropped a valve, and it was being hammered by the valve against the piston!

        I also had a very loud one after taking someone out for a thrash in it, it settled down after a while and has been fine for the last 1500 miles or so!

          You described it as 'very loud' so I'm assuming something wellbeyond 'normal' tappet type noise? If not, it may be less serious. Some Stags (including mine) do suffer from intermittent tappet noise. Ever since I've had my car, there's been a slight tappet noise from the rear couple of cylinders on the left cylinder bank (passenger side). It's usually not evident on cold start-up, becomes apparent within the first couple of minutes, but then subsides as the engine gets up to normal temperature. However, it's not consistent, sometimes I can hear it at fast idle,sometimes it's barely audible and at other times it comes and goes. It sounds like classic tappet noise rather than camshaft wear - my tappet clearances are spot on and the engine runs and performs well. I've been advised that it's probably the cam bucket skirtstapping part of the head casting due to wear or casting imperfection.The permanent cure is either to grind off the areas where the tappets strike the inner surface of the head ormachine thetappet boresand fit oversize cam buckets. It has no effect on the cars performance or reliability so it's a job that can wait until the next time the head comes off.

" Apparently this is quite common on these tappets, that also happened to be the one that got the metal in (the rear cylinder) I think it's because this head tends to run hotter and that part of the engine can get less oil?!

              Yeah, I had this for 17 years until I changed the cylinder heads this year. No matter how often I shimmed the tappets or changed followers I could never get rid of it. The LH one I fitted was brand new (eBay find) and it is a dream to finally have quiet cylinder heads. It seems to be more prevalent on Mk1 heads.

                Me too....exactly the same....left hand head.

                Interestingly, since looking, I've discovered that I have a MK1 left head and MK2 right head. That may explain my tappety noise and slightly raised running temp. Engine runs sweet as a nut so not going to play around with it.

                  Hello

                  Just had the garage on the phone. They took the cam cover off and found a loose baffle plate which they duly welded back. So.. not too serious but worth looking out for. Thanks for all your suggestions and remedies folks.

                    Thats not fair David!If it had been me the baffle would have defied gravity, whended its way up to the cam sprocket where it would have mysteriously attached itself andbroken the chain.

                      Yes Sheepdip that would have been bad luckand probably would have happened if the plate had totally detached if my luck is anything like yours.

                      Anyway just been for another spin (seems fine)...have a blastinto work tomorrow if the weathers half decent.

                      Planning to go to the Isle ofMan inher week after next.

                      Anyone know if we have any members over there?
