Cubby Hole Speaker Inserts

I am considering mounting a pair of stereo speakers into the back of the stag, and understand there are some inserts available for the cubby panels - although I have never seen a set (would appreciate a photo if anyone has one I can look at).

I know it changes the integrity of the car to actually cut the speakers into the upper portion of the side panels, but I am quite happy to do this if the cubby inserts are no good. I also thought it may be a better sound if the speakers are mounted higher up?

    Any opinions?

I've just about finished my install using the BosScreen panels, shall post a picture in the next few days. They are very good.

Rouseboy - I fitted the cubby panels and speakers, not wanting to cut the panels, but to remain within the cubby panel dimensions - this limits the speaker size?

I've fitted 3.5" I think and the sound, admittedly with a Windstop muffling it, is a little "bass'y" and quiet. Larger speakers I think will fit higher up and further back in the panels, if you don't mind butchering the panel.

Mine's O.K. , better than the single dashtop speaker I had before but could be better.

Blaupunkt component speakers in cubby panels. I bought these new old stock being around 10 years old or so. Apparently they are better quality than current models and no 'bling' factor...just right!

They are 5" units that just fit without cutting out the back of the panels. The tweeters are surface mounted with just a small hole for the wires.

While at it I bought a suitably sized amp that lives under the passenger seat.

Finally the head unit, a Blaupunkt NAV56E, sat nav, mobile phone, USB, bluetooth audio (wireless to my iphone/ipod), oh, CD and radio! I bought it secondhand for £199, new with the bluetooth/mobile phone add on something silly like £600 from your local stealer!

and switched on a high resolution TFT display.

Although super high tech, I don't think it looks too out of place having two chrome knobs and no fold out display.

          It sounds good too!

Wow - its like Jodrell Bank in there! Nicely done.
I think I have decided to go for a set of these cubby inserts - they look the part, although will probably choose a slightly slimmer speaker grille.

I have looked at the retro Moss head unit which Dave M mentioned last week -

            - but will have to wait for the bank manager (her indoors) to authorise such extravagance!

                Very nice installation.
I tried to fit a Blaupunkt Travelpilot in to my Stag the other day, as I happen to have one in the cupboard, but couldn't quite get it to go back far enough. The heater gets in the way and left it sticking out about 1/2 an inch.
Am I missing something here or am I just not pushing hard enough? cheers, John

Unless your travelpilot is longer than mine, should fit okay. The rubber stopper on the back of the unit just misses the heater, giving sufficient clearance for the aerial, GPS, and ISO leads.

If you remove the parcel tray and heater duct you have a clear view behind the unit when installed to check all the wires have not bent into any silly positions.

Thanks, I'll have another go tonight and try to get right in behind it to see what's getting in the way. I did actually try measuring the depth and still managed to convince myself that it wouldn't fit...

Finally got it in. The bottom corner was catching on the choke cable so after a few minutes re-arranging things it went in.

Then I remembered that this model of the Travel Pilot needs a speed pulse or the sat nav doesn't work.

I'll be happy to hear if anyone has a quick, easy and cheap way to get speed pulses, but I don't really like the idea of magnets on the prop shaft....

Perhaps I'll give up and go back to a simpler radio.

Do you have an option to turn off the speed pulse input?...you can with my NAV56E fortunately.

Mine is a Travelpilot E2 and I did have a quick look through the menu but couldn't find that option.
I've just looked at the specification on the internet and it says: 'Some vehicles require wheel sensor kit'
Still, can't worry too much as it will be a while before I'm far enough away from home in the Stag to actually get lost!
