Stag disks and pads

Hi,

I'm putting in some new standard front disks, and am thinking of using new EBC "green stuff" pads. Anybody had experience of these on a Stag?

No experience of using them on the Stag, but I've used them elsewhere. Theycan take more timeto bed in than standard pads, probably more so if your disks are worn - might be worth changing disks at the same time? The claimed reduction in brake dust is certainly valid. However, in myview the standard braking system in fine fettle is more than adequate (not difficult to lock the wheels), so no need to spend more than you need.

I put them on my Lotus Elan Sprint and it made alot of difference. The later ones come with a coating that removes brake disk glaze so make sure you get some of these.

I fitted them to my Stag last year and I didn't find any noticeable difference in performance. What I DID get, however, and what eventually led to me taking the damned things back out again, was a terrible squealing noise under braking. These new pads are, of necessity, lined with a harder substance than the old ferodo and there is much less 'give' when applied. I must have removed/cleaned/filed them half a dozen times and each time they would be silent for a few miles and then started squealing again. I fitted a set of standard pads and haven't heard a squeak (literally) for 2,000 miles!

Very common problem, but easily fixed with anti squeal shims or a bit of coppergrease on the back of the pads.

Tried all that, I'm afraid! It actually became a real challenge and I was SO determined to sort it that I spent far too much time trying new ideas. Eventually I gave up. To be fair, with hindsight, I may have got on better if I had matched the new pads with new discs, but the Scotsman in me was reluctant to change the discs when there was plenty of life left in them. I'll stick to what I know, thanks..

Hi,

I'll be putting on new disks as well asnew Green Stuff pads and I'll also try the copper grease trick when I do the first install. I'll post the result.

I've put the green pads in, with a bit of copper grease on the back, but I left off the anti-squeal shims, basically because theres a rubber pad attached to back of each green pad and the shims would not have sat correctly. No squeal so far......

Also replaced the both disks and calipers at the same time. ( Also replaced brake hoses with braided ones, new front wheel bearings, damper gaiters, rear shoes ).

I'll update should squeal appear after bedding in of pads and a few thousand mile under my belt.

1000 miles later and the offside set has started squealing, dogs start howling when I pull up. I've tried copper grease and the anti-squeal shims, no joy, so next weekend will replace with standard pads.
