Mytrailered homeStag reurned with a brokensteering lock - the key turns between ignition and start but can't be removed without great difficulty. Reckon somebody didn't realise the way to remove key. Anyone know if this is repairable or a new lock (+ door and fuel cap )?
Who broke it? Was it trialled by a breakdown company or a mate if the first option make them pay for a new set of locks as I don't think you can fix the ignition barrel once damaged:shock:
Hi Stustag. Nope it wasn't a mate (they wisely don't get involved with Stags) but was just like it when car returned home. It could have been the garage it was left at or somewhere en-route trailering. I'll see if insurance will cover it as "damage" but chances are they'll only replace steering lock and not all the locks the key affects.
The link beteen the lock barrel and elctrical switch isa weak piece made of 'muck-metal'.
I bought my car with a broken switch andeventually got a replacement complete switch unit and fitted my own lock barrel to it.
But in the meantime I used a screwdriver to turn the electrical switch to keep motoring.
The same basic steering lock is used across a wide range of Triumph cars (eg Dolly) and other BMC cars. Take the bits off, and have a look around your local scrapper, if they have old cars.
Hi Colin, thanks for reply. I think the problem must be internal to the barrel as switch still works ok operated by key. I reckon somebody didn't realise they had to press key in to turn it completely back to "0", and forced it round bending whatever inside the barrel. So now inserting key and using is fine, but extracting from ignition point involves careful turning/pushing/pulling until it bumps over. It will eventually break the key as force is high. But I'd like to repair so can continue to use same key.
