What do you think of my shaft?

Here's the quill shaft, quite a groove and some pitting in it!

Does anyone sell just the shaft,or can this one be machined smooth or something?

Paddocks and Rimmers do an exchange reconditioned housing so, will this be any good for exchange?

Worringly the bearing seems OK which suggests the noise was from the diff, I'll have to take it a transmission specialist down the road for a professional opinion I think.

What type of seal was fitted to the diff was it rubber or leather? That shaft looks like its U/S to me, it will never seal withthat damage.

Hi Les, I'm not sure what it's made of, something black, brittle and crumbly!!

It took a bit of mangling to remove!

It is possible to repair the seal surface with a product which used to be called a 'Speedi Sleeve' by their original manufacturer. They are in effect a thin sleeve with a ground surface which is positioned over the damaged area. The sleeve includes an end flange which is used to press the sleeve into position which is then simply torn away to leave the sleeve in position.
I suggest you try an Engineer's Supplier like Cromwell. They will need to know the shaft diameter accurately (or take the part and they will measure it) and they can then pick a suitable sleeve giving the required fit.
These sleeve work a treat - I have used them on axle flanges, gearbox shafts and crank pulleys without any problems
            Regards
            Brian

Its a leather seal I believe and people say these are the best type to use,I recently put one in my diff,I first soaked the seal in oil for a few hours before fitting it.

              So far no leaks.

                Hi Kevin

The seal is a leather one and probably original, the quill shaft may seal but is pitted heavily.

I have a good spare quill shaft I can send you just PM your address and I will send it tomorrow.

                  Kevin

That's an original type LEATHER seal that you had fitted, I am not sure of when they stopped making them but all that you can get now is rubber. How smooth was the bearing, it could be very noisy and yet show very little signs of wear/play when inspected. The housing that it sits in will accentuate any rumble from the bearing, if the seal has been leaking for some time then the grease within the bearing will have beenwashed-outwith diff oil, this will destroy the bearing over time as the correctlubrication is notpresent all the time. Is it possible to refit the quill shaft into the housing and turn it at speed with say an electric drill ? if so then this may show if the bearing is rumbling or not. Was your diff noisy all the time or was the noise only on over-run/Cruise/acceleration.

                  Les.

You can get leather seals from Chris Witor in Somerset.

Les, the diff/bearing made a kind of screeching noise, which sounded to me like a bearing, normally on a light throttle or none at all. It was only there at around 40-50 mph and came on quite suddenly last weekend although my diff has dripped since I've owned the car. It didn't seem to get significantly worse in over 500 miles of driving including the journey to ND and back. Mercifully everything sounded normal at 60+mph.

The bearing is out of the housing now, I suppose I could put it back in and try the drill thing, it feels quite smooth, but as I said it was more of a screech than a rumble.

I've taken a short video of the play in the washer on the diff input shaft which I'll try to put on Youtube in a bit.

Stu, I'll send you a PM, thanks very much for your offer.

Thanks everyone else for the info, keep it coming!!

I just removed the rear end completely and found the quill shaft to have similar markings you can have the area metal spayed dont know how much the cost would be as compared to speedy sleeves.

I'd go with a speedi sleeve if you can get one in that size Kevin. Metal spraying would require you to get the shaft ground before and after to achieve size and surface finish.......usually ends up costing around £100.

                            Hi Kevin

Iwould strongly suspect the bearimg has worn. For the shaft to have worn like that it must be running out of centre and catching the steel cover of the seal.

I have a spare extension and diff to any one who wishes to collect them

I might have to take you up on the spare diff! (I still fancy those wheel nuts of yours too!)
