Going to Hereford in the morning....

Going to Steels Honda in Hereford in the morning, to pick up a replacement autobox for my CR-V which has developed a very bumpy 3-2 shift (the clutch pack has had it) - a bargain from ebay at £99 with 57k on the box.

What would be my best route from Surrey in your opinion (with local knowledge of roadworks), and is there anywhere in the area to grab a decent bacon roll before the return journey?

    Ta

    Hi Russ

I would use the M4,A419,A417,M5,M50,A49 to get there.

Across the road from Steels is the high street next to Tesco and there are some good cafes up ther to get a bacon butty or fish and chips.

Cheers for that Stuart - although the thought of fish and chips at 8.30 am is a daunting one as I'm leaving at 4.30am........

Normally not Steve - but I think my CR-V spent a lot of it's 86,000 mile life in traffic - the endfloat on 2nd gear clutch pack is excessive due to wear in the friction plates, and hammers into 2 when accelerating after roll out sometimes. This situation won't get better and I may well get a plate break with the shock and lose 2nd completely........The worn plates have also contaminated the filter screen inside as I get an occasional 3-4 flare under light throttle on an upward incline due to low overall box pressure. You can't clean the filter without a box split/strip so opted for a S/H box....

I used to rebuild Honda autoboxes in the Rover garage being they were fitted to so many Rovers, and they weren't available as exchange from factory..... so muggins here used to do them. 2nd gear clutch pack failure was a real weak spot as it was the most used gear in the box during normal driving - happily mine hasn't failed completely yet but I'm hedging my bets, and to make matters worse someone had done a fluid change and used the wrong fluid - Dexron 2 instead of the horrendously expensive at £36 for 4 litres, but only fluid to use, ATF-Z1......that has caused more harm.

            Russ

Good second hand unit is def theway to go ,I needed an engine for my Mitsubishi L300 van and found a front smashed (engine under seat) one locally which had been sitting for a long time ,36K miles no leaks and started first time once the battery was charged .blew loads of settled dust off it when it started so shows how long it had sat there .Gave the guy £120 for the whole van and that engine got swapped into 3 of my vans over the years.

            Hope you get as lucky

            Cheers Steve

Hi Russ, If you have time on your return journey, take the A466 (right off the A49 5 mls out of Hereford), follow to Monmouth, then the A466 to Chepstow - M48 (old Severn Bridge free toll) - M4.

The A466 Monmounth to Chepstow is a very senic drive following the River wye.

              Mark.
