    Replacement Stag Diff

Whilst searching on the internet through various forums, i have came across different alternative diffs that can be fitted into my stag. Is the Triumph 2500 a straight swap?, what other options should be considered at a low cost?

I though the ratios were different. Stag 3.71:1 and the 2000/2500 3.45:1?

              Hiya,

I believe the diff in my Stag is from a 2500 the serial No on the diff starts with ME if I remember correctly. It was fitted when I bought it and I drive in in a "Spirited fashion" and it has held out so far .

              Regards

              Dave

Except if it's from a salon then the back mouting plate is different but you canrefit your Stag one.The estate's are identically mounted. According to a 1975 2000 & 2500parts catalogue the 2000s have 3.7 Diffs the 2500s 3.45

The internal part numbers for the crown wheel and pinon (collapsible spacer) are differerent UKC549 for a Stag UKC548 for a 2000 and 547 for a 2500, so I assume the Stag is stronger?? everything else in the diff seems to have the same part no

The saloon diffs will all fit but sometimes, not all of the bolt holes on a saloon diff will match the stag backplate.

Having said that I used a saloon diff for years with the offending bolt(s) left out and never had a problem with leaks. You could end up having to relocate one of the bolts if you do have a problem although I can't rememberhow muchspace there is on the flange.

In my opinion the 3.45 is ok for the auto but the 3.7 is best for mod. Make sure you don't fit a 4.11 as fitted to some saloons.

I found that when I tried to replace the gasket on mine. Thats how I found out it wasn't a Stag one I had fitted. Plan 'b' was to buy one from Rimmers, naturally it didn't quite fit, so I gave up and made one from a cereal packet:shock:.

I got given one of the saloon diffs from Peter at LD parts with the bolt hole issue and i couldn't seal it properly with 2 of the bolts missing, although i only tried once and didn't think it was worth pursuing.

                      Cheers Steve

There is somewhere on here a list of all the diff prefix letters, ratios, and which cars they came from, but I can't find it.

From memory I believe the Mk2 2.5 PI estate has the same diff as the Stag, but that may be wrong.

I have a 3.45:1 from a 2000/2500 saloon. It had the 'wrong' backplate and I fitted a Stag backplate with the two misaligned holes filled with liquid metal. Gasket made from a cereal packet and fitted with Hylomar. No leaks.
