It looks about right to me - engine bay is not good and makes you wonder what the engine will run like and for how long, no boot carpets, dash looks bad, rear bumper needs re-chroming, however the body looks pretty good but I would take a magnet along and try to stick them to the rear arches, they look a bit dodgy!

It amazes me why someone whos had the car restored dont take the time to rub a bit of overspray off the servo, give the rocker covers and air filter box a fresh lick of paint,a mornings work max.

There's no mention of a hard top either.

This one was pretty cheap too:

It's mine, I picked it up last weekend. There was a slightly eventful run from the seller nearYork to Bedford though - the driver's front brake caliper had started binding before I picked the car up. The seller thought they had freed it off successfully, but we got near home and noticed some rather hot smells and a vibration coming through the steering. Turned out that the caliper had seized during the journey and had burned through the pad and flexi hose. Managed to get replacement calipers from Arthur Smith in Darlington for £180 for the pair including hoses.

Still, £2700 seems like a cheap price - the hard top is a bit ropey and there are a few grot spots on the boot lid but apart from that it seems to be pretty good. The engine pulls really strongly with no misfiring or overheating (we spent some time sitting in traffic and the temperature stayed pretty stable), and the transmission is slick and precise with a properly functional overdrive.

What do people think? Feel free to be honest!

Hi, looks likes a very good price, but my only concern is that it looks like a MK 1, due to the interior lights on the b post, MK1 seats and the regulator box sitting on the suspension turret.MK1's were made up too 1973. Are you sure it was sold as a 76 car?.

Cheers Sukh, yours looks like a mighty fine colour too!

                  Hi Tee Cee,

Interesting point. When I picked it up I was surprised at the seats, they are very similar to the ones on my 1972 2500 PI (other than the fact they fold forwards, of course). The private plate always makes determining the age a bit awkward, but the seller told me it was originally registered with the plate LKA448R which would imply that it is a 76 car. The dates on the V5 all look sensible, I think I might take the commission number and have a poke around the British Motor Heritage information.

I suppose the concern with this is whether it's a ringer/been written off and rebuiltetc? I would be surprised if this was the case, mostly because the seller who I bought it from is an established classic car dealer specialising in some serious exotica (see http://www.classicandsportscar.ltd.u...s.php?uid=5893to see the other stuff they sell)and you might think that he has a reputation to preserve, so would be careful to avoid anything with a dodgy history?

                  Cheers

                  Neal

all the interior is mk1 seats, door panels, dash. best thing to do is try contacting the previous keeper to find out a bit about it.

                      Hi Neal,

Problem with our cars is that they must be the easiest car in the world to ring, plus a lot of MK1,s have been made to look like MK2's with the pin strips and the wheels. I read a few books to find out the differences between the carsso I knew what I was buying.

Looks to me like its a MK2 with a MK1 interior. I wonder if the original interior was black as the tonneau cover is black?

OK so it wants some minor works but isn't that part of the fun of owning and running older cars?

                          Hi NIgel,

Thanks for your thoughts. I completely agree with your comments about the work involved being the main joy of owningthese cars - a lot of the reason for me chosing this particular one is the fact that it's not concours (I want a vehicle that I can use, and not be afraid to get it wet/muddy etc), and that there is some work to be done that gives me the chance to learn more mechanical skills. Working for an investment bank doesn't really develop those.

The main thing I'd like to establish is that the car is honest and not a cut n' shutor similar type of bodge.

there are also mk2s made to look mk1s for tax reasons, anyway yes looks like a nice car, enjoy it and have fun. you can always change bits as you go along if you want.

£2700, is not thatfar away from the price of arecon engine so as long as the motors alright and its not rotten then you cant go wrong really. Enjoy it.
